Donaire vs Vazquez Odds: Nonito Donaire Widely Favored For Win in San Antonio

Tonight's HBO co-feature for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title pits Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO) of the Philippines against the former titleholder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr (21-1-1, 18 KO) of Puerto Rico. Despite this being the talented Donaire's first fight at 122 pounds, he's a significant favorite on the sportsbooks:

Donaire Vazquez
Bovada -1100 +650
5Dimes -2000 +1250
SBG Global -1300 +800

These are huge odds for a fight between two guys as good as this, which speaks to two different things:

  1. How good Nonito Donaire is, and;
  2. How much more hype he's received.

The Bovada line seems the most reasonable in terms of talent levels to me, but betting lines are just about maximizing house profit, and aren't always true reflections of a fight. The Bovada line here is pretty much the same line that Amir Khan had in his favor against Lamont Peterson in December, and Peterson won that fight. It's not far off from the lines Vazquez himself had against Jorge Arce last year and Vazquez lost that fight.

Just in case anyone's wondering, 5Dimes has Vanes Martirosyan at -7500 for his lame fight with Troy Lowry (+2500) on the off-TV undercard.

I think that the favorite is right, but the the unknown variable is the weight.

The Donaire I’ve seen hits accurately, and hard, to the head and body, while moving, and Vasquez won’t be a match for that.

If he carries the weight well, I think the odds are about right.

not enough credit

Wilfredo can win this fight if he is patient and thinks. Judging last fights, Arce would have made anyone look bad that night, he was special. Nonito does miss and looked bad against a defensive minded fighter. Wilfredo has good movement, counter punching and heart. He is a threat…
