What is the combination that takes an above average fighter from just being known in the boxing world to becoming a household name almost everywhere? I know it's not just wins because Ward would be a household name by now. Let's look at certain fighters and try and figure out what makes them a superstar.
Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez:
Amazing boxer, undefeated, has exciting fights, huge Mexican fan base, nice guy, great PR team, y guapo. Since he is learning english I expect him to become an even bigger superstar.
Amazing boxer, outstanding fight record, has exciting fights, huge Filipino fan base, nice guy, and great PR team, and he learned English which helped his fan base grow.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (he's a medium sized star not quite yet super)
Good boxer with great potential, very nice fight record, sometimes has exciting fights, huge Mexican fan base, the son of the legend Julio Cesar Chavez, good PR team, and he's working on his english which should help grow his fan base.
Miguel Cotto (he's a medium sized star)
Very good boxer, outstanding fight record, has exciting fights, huge Puerto Rican fan base, nice guy, great PR team, and knows english which helps with the non spanish speaking boxing fans.
Floyd 'Money' Mayweather Jr:
Amazing boxer, undefeated, is known for his great defensive boxing, has exciting fights from time to time, huge black fan base, huge base of haters (but unlike Jon Jones he uses it to his advantage) knows how to promote himself, and knows how to sell a fight.
What other factors made those three men superstars and two of them medium sized stars?
Then I think of two fighters who are outstanding, but for some reason not considered superstars or really medium sized stars. And the two fighters that come to mind are Andre Ward and Sergio Martinez.
What has to happen for Andre Ward and Sergio Martinez to become superstars?
And what fighters do you see becoming superstars or medium sized stars in the future? (I'll give my picks for future stars Adrien Broner & Josesito Lopez)
