Here's a preview for the next episode of Showtime's All Access series, covering the September 15 fight between Canelo Alvarez and Josesito Lopez. In this clip, we see underdog Lopez go to visit his incarcerated father with his two brothers, and he talks about the chance of his father being deported upon release, and we see the emotional impact this has on him.

This is when I think these type shows can really give us some understanding. Boxing is a sport that lends itself well to a more personal connection with the athlete. I've never felt like I needed or even particularly wanted the backstory of, say, my favorite basketball players -- not like this. But with boxing, since the individual matters most, it works well this way.

And learning more about guys like Josesito Lopez simply makes me care more about their fights, gives me something to root for other than just the performance.
