For the past year and a half, we've been working on Whatever Happened to Tyrell Biggs? and we learned that this is so much more than a sport biopic about the first ever US Super Heavyweight Gold Medalist who fell on hard times. It's a story that has the potential to engage and inspire people of all ages and from all walks of life.
Boxing is so much more than an individual sport. To succeed in boxing requires a major commitment by an entire community - commitment exhibited by coaches, trainers, managers, and family members who support focused boxers every day. Meeting these fighters, both legends and up-and coming pros, and seeing their determination and their dedication has not failed to inspire us.
Tyrell’s presence alone can motivate even the youngest boxers at the West Philadelphia Sheppard Recreation Center. As Filmmakers we felt moved to connect the dots from the classic tragic boxing tale of Tyrell Biggs to the hope of this interfaith and multi generational community that has adopted this fallen hero and, with him, begun writing a new chapter in boxing for a struggling neighborhood.
To succeed it requires a major commitment by an entire community. West Philadelphia and the Shepard Recreation Center are bursting with stories but an unfortunate lack of resources to tell their own tale.
We are closing in on the last two weeks of our Kickstarter campaign. While Kickstarter has given the film more national and International press than we imagined, we are too far away from our $35,000 campaign goal for any comfort.
Please share this with your friends in the boxing community and anyone who has an interest in sports, filmmaking, after school programs, community stories or a passion for a good cause. If this story triggers anything in you then please take five minutes to donate. Every dollar and supporter counts.
This is such an important project - not just for those of us who have dedicated ourselves to it, but for the many lives that can be helped by this incredible story.
The campaign ends on the morning of November 25th. Join #TeamBiggs today.
