WE THE PEOPLE PROMOTIONS

WE THE PEOPLE I have been a big boxing fan since I was 5 years, I have always been intrigued by the "sweet science" of the sport. The purpose of writing this article is to spark more fire for the fight all fight fans and even non fight fans want to see and that is Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. These three words "We The People" has so much power all across the world because when "We The People" is utilized properly we can get whatever we want accomplished across the world and it is also the introduction to our U.S. constitution. No one cares about Bob Arum Promotions (Top Rank), Golden Boy Promotions, Mayweather Promotions, Showtime, or HBO. We The People is the biggest network and promotional team out there today and We The People represent the fans, the fans are the ones that made each entity I mentioned above who they are today. No we do not want Pacquiao/Bradley II, no we do not want Pacquiao/Marquez V, no We do not want Mayweather/Khan, We want Mayweather/Pacquiao and We want it now! December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks took a strong stance in Montgomery, Alabama. I am sure most of us are familiar with this historic moment in American history, she refused to go and sit in back of the bus. Once African Americans within Montgomery decided enough was enough, Montgomery Improvement Association organized a bus boycott that lasted over 300 hundred days. During this period 75% of African Americans were using the local transit bus system in Montgomery. Now picture yourself as a businessman/woman in any business in general and imagine losing the service of 75% of your customers for a period of over 300 days, common sense would tell you this would hurt the flow of your business or company tremendously economically. This historic boycott eventually led to force the hand of lawmakers to change laws in benefit of African Americans, whereby they could now sit at any section of the bus of their choice, and also African Americans being employed as bus drivers. Not in any shape, form or fashion am I comparing this great moment in American history to Mayweather/Pacquiao but I used this story we are most familiar with, to remind people that the power is within our hands to make a change. Sports is entertainment. A time away from stressful work, a time with close family and friends, a time to enjoy and have fun. We choose what makes us happy. Mayweather is a multi-millionaire because of We, Pacquiao is a multi-millionaire because of We, these big time boxing promotional companies are big because of We. We put money in their pockets through TV networks, ticket sales, sponsorships, pay-per-view and many more. Let us not forget, they do not have to dictate for us. I hear such arguments like as long as Bob Arum is the Pacquiao’s promoter, the fight we are all dying to see will never take place and such arguments makes me sick. Both are great talented fights of our era and let us not any longer settle for less. The rumored fight is Mayweather vs Khan, I do not believe anyone in their right mind think this will be a competitive fight nor does Khan stand a chance against Mayweather. At the end of it all, I am not even saying he has to fight Pacquiao but we want competitive fights period. But this is what happens, news come out that Mayweather vs Khan will happen May 2014. Then We get suckered to pay $70 to pay-per-view for the fight, all local and major sports bars order the fight for public viewing, we have big fight parties, we watch the fight, Mayweather easily gets a win, a cool $40 million dollars in his pocket, heavy payday for the promotional teams. Then We begin a new public outcry of We want better competition, We want Mayweather/Pacquiao. Pay attention the power is within We. A good recent example, I can give fight fans, boxing analyst and sports writers are the upcoming bout between Adrien Broner vs. Chino Maidana and I hope this will raise some eyebrows. If We can recall, the Broner vs Maidana was initially projected as a pay-per-view bout but now the fight will be aired on Showtime Network, the simple and best question is why? The answer is We The People. I read through many articles stating that Adrien Broner is not pay-per-view material as of yet and eventually this loud voice of We The People got into the ears of these promotional teams and it was later projected the fight would not produce good pay-per-view buys, guess who buys? I am sure you guess correctly, We The People. Since We The People will not be suckered to pay $40-$50 to watch Adrien Broner, they had no choice but to put it on Showtime network. Not only was it dropped to Showtime but the venue was changed as well from Vegas to the Alamodome. That is the power We The People have. I am not saying boycott a Mayweather or Pacquiao fight but I believe We can deliver the big blow, We can deliver the fight that we want, the fight we want to pay for entertainment. Imagine for example, Mayweather’s last fight against Alvarez drew 2 million viewers/buyers and then he takes on a fight against Khan and now the pay-per-view sales for this bout is 40,000 – 50,000 do you not think these promotional companies, sponsors would reconsider the choice of fights they put out for us to watch? Would Money Team still be considered Money Team if he is taking huge losses in revenue due to lack of competition? These are questions We need to ask ourselves as boxing fans. I am a huge fan of Mayweather, I am glad to see him make good money in the sport, he deserves it. He is a great and talented fighter. I believe as he has matured he has become more humble, some may disagree but listen to his recent interviews and how he is always complementing others. He is a great story in American history. He struggled financially growing up as a child, God gave him a gift, he worked hard on his craft and gift, and he has accumulated mass wealth, this is a story we should embrace. In any craft, business, or occupation, when We dedicate ourselves tirelessly We should be rewarded and We rewarded him that is why We are drawn to him, just like Muhammad Ali, just like Mike Tyson. The reward come from We The People, not these big time promotional companies. We have seen movie stars, film producers, take huge losses and hits when they do not perform at a peak level that we are used to seeing. I personally believe with entertainment We should be able to dictate what we want to watch. Look at how much money Super Bowl Sundays make just from TV ads on local TV CBS, last year alone $230 million was made by CBS for Super Bowl Sunday. These companies pay outrageous money for TV ads for only 30 seconds because the know the ratings Super Bowl Sunday draw and guess what? Fox recently reported TV ads are "sold out" and We do not even have the teams for Super Bowl Sunday, that is the power of We The People. The huge ratings represent "We The People". Mayweather has 4 fights remaining with Showtime and let us dictate what We want to see. They should not feel like they have us locked in to watch whatever they put out. I know there is a great dislike in the boxing community for Don King but Don King gave us great boxing. I could recall during the 90s when he would have fight cards like, Felix Trinidad, Terry Norris, Julio Caesar Chavez, Julian Jackson, these would be the featured boxers on one card, one night of boxing and when We paid $40 We knew, We got our money worth. Recently, Mayweather Sr. talked about Pacquiao needing to fight Bradley before he can call out Mayweather Jr and I feel that is a disrespect to the sport. The majority of us know Pacquiao did not lose that fight, that is also a gray area we hope to see get better in boxing and that is the scoring of fights, and Mayweather Sr as a pioneer of boxing should not publicly state that Pacquiao need Bradley simply because the fight was called against him. We also noticed weird scoring in his son’s own last bout against Alvarez, one of the judges scored the bout 114-114, if Mayweather Jr was robbed of the match would he publicly claim Mayweather needs Alvarez? We have also had enough of Pacquiao/Marquez, I do not care what anyone would say but Pacquiao was on the verge of a KO until he got careless and was caught with a solid counter-punch. The focal point of this article is to point out the power of We The People and the different sectors of life where We The People have a major impact. Let us be rewarded by watching what We want to see. We made these fighters and promotional companies money. We spend our hard earned money after work to get excited for sports entertainment and entertainment in general. We have these fighters debating and arguing over $100 million dollar, whether it be 60-40 or 50-50, while they tell stories of how they struggled coming. Mayweather has told of his struggles, Pacquiao has told of his stories and struggle growing up in the Philippines and it is a disgrace to us that are simply boxing fanatics that are willing to go way out of our budget to spend $70 for a viewing of sport that we love for 36 minutes or less for excitement. This fight is global and it is what the world want. It is about time these promotional teams humble themselves, fighters humble themselves, get this contract signed, make us happy, and receive their huge lump sum at the end for us to continue to be dedicated fans to the sport. Or We just may have to take a stance and turn the other cheek, just like Rosa Parks said she will not sit in the back of the bus because she is tired, we would just have to say we will not have to watch garbage because we are tired. That is how We can send a message, go and fight in an empty arena with low pay-per-view sales, and see which boxer could brag or boast about being a millionaire or pick and choose whatever fight they want. The power is within We The People!
