Carl Frampton to return on May 11, nearing world title push

Carl Frampton is getting close to making a run at a world title, and the new European super bantamweight champion will return May 11 in Belfast.

Carl Frampton will return to the ring on May 11 at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, in what may wind up being a world title eliminator, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.

"After the IBF title is fought for next week they will put out a final eliminator for the mandatory position and I would expect us to be in there. The WBC is an interesting situation – Kiko is heavily World ranked which makes a difference. Sky came to me and said they'd like a show on May 11 and luckily the Odyssey Arena is available so we'll be back then for another massive night."

The IBF title will be contested between Jhontan Romero and Alejandro Lopez, while the WBC belt was recently vacated by Abner Mares, and will be fought for on April 20, when Victor Terrazas faces Cristian Mijares.

Frampton (16-0, 11 KO) is possibly in the IBF mix, as he said he's been "basically assured" that he's in line for a title shot with his win over Kiko Martinez, which netted him the European title. There's also the potential for a fight with Scott Quigg, which both fighters say they want but that also might wait, as it would be even bigger with a world title on the line.

Is Frampton ready for a world title shot?
