Garrett Wilson, USBA cruiserweight champion, is 1 step away from being the mandatory challenger for the IBF world championship (currently held by Yoan Pablo Hernandez). But first he must get by Alexander Alekseev, former EBU (European) cruiserweight champion.
A week ago Peltz Boxing released a press release announcing Garrett "The Ultimate Warrior" Wilson's Feb. 13 final US presser / media day leading into his Feb. 22nd showdown with Alexander Alekseev. It turned out to be more of an informal media day with some home cooked free food, open to the public. Unfortunately I could not partake in the eating as I was busy getting an interview with, potentially, the next face of the cruiserweight division in the United States. This all took place in South Philadelphia's Marian Anderson Recreation Center.
Furthermore, Alekseev-Wilson is a final eliminator for the IBF cruiserweight title. It will be televised live from Romania via Eurosport. Other bouts on the card include Manuel Charr-Yakup Saglam for the WBC International Silver heavyweight title, Christian Hammer -Oleksiy Mazikin for the WBO European heavyweight title, and Klara Svensson-Kremena Petkova. Svensson-Petkova will apparently be an inaugural WBC Silver female light welterweight title fight. Should Petkova pull off the upset she's likely to still be an even bigger underdog against Delfine Persoon, whom she's scheduled to face a little over a month later.
In any event, I'll have a full story on Garrett coming out fight week. For now, enjoy the videos (below) that I made today. The first of which is an opening announcement featuring Garrett's manager / trainer Rodney Rice, Philadelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, fellow boxing journalist George H. Hanson Jr., and naturally the man of the hour, Garrett Wilson. The second video is a 1 on 1 interview I conducted with Garrett a little later.
Media day quotes may / may not be added later. If not, some will go in next week's story.
Notable active fighters in attendance included Steve Cunningham, Yusaf Mack, and Eric Hunter.
