Ricardo Mayorga has a date and venue set for his mixed martial arts debut, MMAMania.com reports today, as the 39-year-old brawler and faded boxing star will fight under the Omega MMA banner in Managua, Nicaragua, on April 27.
Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KO) was supposedly going to return to the boxing ring on February 22 in Nicaragua, but that's not listed on BoxRec, which doesn't mean it's not happening, but it's been iffy from the get-go, since that was only really known a few days ago. The former welterweight and junior middleweight champion hasn't fought since March 2011, when he lost to Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas on Showtime pay-per-view.
Mayorga tried to fight in MMA back in 2010, signing with a group called Shine Fights in late 2009, and he was then set to face MMA vet Din Thomas, a beyond credible foe for someone debuting in the sport. Don King prevented that from happening, which led Mayorga to a late 2010 return to boxing, and then the Cotto fight a few months later.
Whether or not this actually happens is anyone's guess, and it would be wise to not expect anyone good to be in there with Mayorga if it does, but that's the latest news on Ricardo Mayorga, anyway.
