Broner vs Rees: HBO main event set after fighters make weight

Adrien Broner and Gavin Rees hit the scales and made weight today in Atlantic City, setting up tomorrow night's HBO World Championship Boxing main event.

Tomorrow night's HBO World Championship Boxing is good to go, as the fighters made weight today in Atlantic City, and Adrien Broner is set to defend his WBC lightweight title against Gavin Rees in the main event.

Broner (25-0, 21 KO) weighed in holding a Sprite can at 134 pounds, with Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO) coming in at 134½ pounds. Though their weights are basically the exact same, Broner was massive standing next to Rees, whose listed height of 5'7" has always been a bit generous. Broner, also listed at 5'7" on BoxRec, looked three or four inches taller and simply a bigger man, whispering trash talk into Rees' ear and calling him ugly and a bum. Rees ignored the chatter.

In the new HBO co-feature, Sakio Bika (30-5-2, 21 KO) will face Nikola Sjekloca (25-0, 7 KO) in a WBC super middleweight eliminator. Both fighters weighed in at 167½. In theory, the winner is lined up to face the recovering Andre Ward. Bika gave Ward his toughest fight back in 2010.

Off television, Vicente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KO) will face Edner Cherry (30-6-2, 16 KO) in what could wind up really being the fight of the night. Both veterans are in sort of a must-win situation to stay in contention at 130, and each weighed in at 129½.

Also on the card, Demetrius Hopkins (32-2-1, 12 KO) will face Charles Whittaker (39-13-2, 23 KO) in a 12-round junior middleweight bout. Hopkins came in at 152½, with Whittaker at 154. Rau'Shee Warren, Robert Easter, and Jamel Herring will also be in action.

BLH will have live coverage of the Broner-Rees card on HBO tomorrow night, and stay tuned for our staff picks this evening.
