After vacating his super bantamweight title, Abner Mares has put in a request with the WBC to face the featherweight champion next, be it Daniel Ponce De Leon or Jayson Velez.

Abner Mares has requested a shot at the WBC featherweight title, where he would face the winner of the March 2 fight between Daniel Ponce De Leon and Jayson Velez, according to a report at World Boxing News.

Jose Sulaiman says the WBC will vote on the request soon, but it should be expected that Mares will get the opportunity. He's an undefeated titlist moving up in weight, not to mention backed by Golden Boy Promotions, and a fight with the Ponce De Leon-Velez winner would likely be very easy to make. Ponce De Leon is promoted by Golden Boy, while Velez is with Miguel Cotto Promotions, which has been working closely with GBP.

Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO) chose to vacate the 122-pound title when a unification bout with Top Rank's Nonito Donaire went off the table. Both fighters reportedly want the bout badly, but the promoters simply cannot come together and make it a reality. Fans, too, have demanded the fight, which is a great one on paper.

Mares has said he hopes to return in April for his next fight, which could still happen.

Should Abner get the immediate title shot at 126 pounds? Do you think either Ponce De Leon or Velez could beat him?
