Golden Boy Promotions is hoping to finalize a May 18 Showtime doubleheader featuring a pair of world title fights at 147 and 140 pounds in Atlantic City.
Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy says that his company is working to put together a nice doubleheader in Atlantic City on May 18, airing on Showtime, of course, with Devon Alexander and Kell Brook finally getting together for their IBF welterweight title fight, and Lamont Peterson possibly defending his IBF junior welterweight title against Lucas Matthysse.
Alexander (24-1, 13 KO) and Brook (29-0, 19 KO) have had a pair of dates (January 19 and February 23) postponed due to injuries, first to Brook and then to Alexander, and the fight was in some doubt when Alexander was tweeted as a possible opponent for Floyd Mayweather instead.
But that fight is still going to happen, and a new date is needed. May 18 will have the boxing world still on something of a high coming out of the May 4 Floyd Mayweather show, so it's good timing.
Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO) just defended his belt last Friday, stopping Kendall Holt in the eighth round. Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO) has been trying to lock up a shot at WBC titleholder Danny Garcia, but somewhere down the chain of people who make fights happen, it seems that matchup is being clearly avoided for the time being.
Peterson signed with Golden Boy a few weeks ago, though they did not promote the Holt fight in any way, so this would be his debut as a GBP fighter. It's a very good fight at the least, and could be terrific.
