Floyd Mayweather says May 4 fight is almost done -- with Devon Alexander

Al Bello

Floyd Mayweather threw a curveball tonight on Twitter, announcing that negotiations for his May 4 fight are almost complete, with Devon Alexander as the 'front runner' for the bout.

The world has been expecting Robert Guerrero, or possibly darkhorse candidate Canelo Alvarez. But Floyd Mayweather says tonight on Twitter that his next fight will come against neither man, but instead IBF welterweight titlist and fellow Al Haymon fighter Devon Alexander.

It's certainly not for sure, and could just be Floyd messing with everyone and getting them off the obvious Guerrero scent we've all expected for about a month to be announced any day now, but if this is serious, it's a major curveball thrown by the world's biggest money fighter.

Here's what Floyd tweeted this evening:

The negotiations for my fight are almost done. The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It’d be a unification bout at welterweight.

Alexander (24-1, 13 KO) won the IBF belt in October from Randall Bailey in a stinker fight that was booed out of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Showtime. The 25-year-old St. Louis native was supposed to make a mandatory defense against Kell Brook in January, but it was postponed when Brook suffered an injury. The fight was rescheduled for February 23, and Alexander postponed it with a reported biceps injury just this week.

The early reaction from social media has been a mixed bag at best, with most, it seems, leaning toward the "unfavorable" side.

What do you think? Is Mayweather-Alexander a fight you'll pay for on May 4? Would you prefer Guerrero as Floyd's opponent? And just what the hell is going on here, anyway?
