Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions says there haven't been any negotiations for a Floyd Mayweather-Devon Alexander fight, giving the impression that Mayweather was just stirring the pot naming Alexander as his likely May 4 opponent.

Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer says that Floyd Mayweather has an opponent in his sights, but won't name him. However, by telling BoxingScene.com that Devon Alexander is not the opponent for May 4, Schaefer has probably confirmed that Robert Guerrero is still the probable foe for Floyd.

Mayweather said that Alexander was the "leading candidate" to face him earlier this week, which sent the boxing world into a big uproar and a ton of discussion. Schaefer, though, says that he's working on rescheduling the twice-postponed fight between Alexander and IBF mandatory challenger Kell Brook:

"The IBF wouldn't grant a step-aside and so therefore Devon Alexander is going to go and fight Kell Brook, which by the way is the fight I'm working on re-scheduling.

"I have absolutely no awareness of any negotiations taking place with a fighter who is under a promotional contact with us. And Al Haymon, who is the adviser for Devon Alexander and Floyd Mayweather as well, has not confided to me either that there would be any negotiations going on unbeknownst to me."

Even after Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO) tweeted about Alexander (24-1, 13 KO) and got everyone in a tizzy, most insiders still expected that Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO) would be the one to land the fight. It appears that's the case, unless Schaefer is helping with the big curveball, which isn't really likely. Mayweather had something to gain by talking about Alexander, but Schaefer doesn't, really.
