Yuriorkis Gamboa was previously reported to be in negotiations to face Juan Carlos Burgos in an HBO fight on June 8 from Las Vegas, but now it appears that he'll face Darley Perez, and the fight won't be held in Vegas after all.
Perez (28-0, 19 KO) is a 29-year-old Colombian, and has a bit better of an on-paper record than the typical Colombian Record, though it's still short of a record you'd expect to really challenge a top fighter like Gamboa (22-0, 16 KO). But as we've all seen, and saw in his last fight with Michael Farenas, Gamboa doesn't have the greatest chin or balance, and his inactivity is doing him no favors. Also, he's moving up to lightweight, which might help, but also might just present the same problems but against increasingly bigger foes.
Gamboa-TBA will be broadcast by HBO on June 8. The fight was originally thought to be in Vegas, where promoter 50 Cent had put in the paperwork to run a show with Gamboa on that date, but there is some chance it could wind up in Montreal with the Chad Dawson-Adonis Stevenson bout, as Gary Shaw promotes both Dawson and Perez, but that is just speculation.
