IBF welterweight titlist Devon Alexander will be in the ring on May 18, whether or not Kell Brook has to pull out due to another injury, this time reportedly a double stress fracture in his foot.
"Don't know for sure (what's wrong with Brook). He complained about issues with his foot and is going to see a specialist on Monday, but Devon will stay on. If necessary, against somebody else," (Golden Boy CEO Richard) Schaefer said.
Alexander (24-1, 13 KO) hasn't fought since last October, when he beat Randall Bailey for the IBF title. Brook (29-0, 19 KO) is his mandatory challenger, but if the fight is again postponed, it will be the third time, and at that point, the healthy fighter simply needs to get back into the ring, and the IBF would likely have no choice but to allow an exemption, or even remove Brook as mandatory challenger.
If the fight does not go down, then Golden Boy only has about a month to secure a new opponent for Alexander, so little should be expected if that's the route that has to be taken.
