The recent announcement of the Floyd Mayweather -Saul Alvarez fight is fantastic for boxing. It's going to be the biggest and most hyped fight in years. It's the most coveted fight in the boxing world and could lead to near record box office success. The PPV buys will surely be a boon for Golden Boy who are having a banner year.
Assuming Mayweather wins (and I thin he does by sublimely pot-shotting Canelo to a UD), his star is going to be big as it ever has been. I think the success of Mayweather and GBP is going to finally catch the inner greed of Bob Arum and bring him to the negotiating table. There's just too much money to be made.
I think Arum picks up the phone and calls De La Hoya and Schaeffer and finally dials up the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. This of course, assumes that Manny gets past Brandon Rios which I think is a high probability. Rios sits in the pocket all day and all night and should be ripe for a knockout. Pacman coming off a brutal KO--it would also bring his star power back to the top.
I know this assuming two outcomes--but they are two outcomes favored by pundits and Vegas alike. But it would put the Mayweahter-Pacquiao fight back in the public eye and I believe Arum would be willing to take the B-side payday in the fight. After watching Mayweather-Canelo do 1.5-2MM PPV buys, I just think there's going to be so much money that TR will swallow its pride and get in on the action.
I also see Mayweather more interested in the fight and securing his legacy--with big wins over Canelo and Pacquiao. I think the Canelo fight shows he's interested in the legacy aspect--going down as an all-time great. Aside from the pure haters, most will acknowledge his dominance if he goest like this. Retiring after those wins would be perfect. I'm not sure what's available to him after that--unless he loses and exercises a rematch clause or finishes up against a Matthysse or a rejuvenated Khan.
