Bob Arum is always careful about what he says, and here's another instance: The veteran promoter says that sure, he's interested in signing Andre Ward to Top Rank, but only if Ward is free, and that he has not yet approached the super middleweight champ about making a move.
Ward is still under contract to Goossen Tutor Promotions, and that company could sue Top Rank if there were evidence that Top Rank tried to lure him out of his current deal.
It was reported earlier this week that Ward was looking for a way out at GTP, which really didn't surprise anyone. Goossen Tutor, as good a job as they've done with Ward, are limited in their resources and have probably maxed out in how far they can take Ward, even with the fighter now being with HBO. And if it's not that, Ward may simply see Top Rank as a bigger, better platform, as he tries to go from "star fighter" to actual star fighter.
Or maybe there's really nothing to this at all. That's always possible.
