Adrien Broner open to fights at 135, 140, and 147

Al Bello

Following last night's jump to welterweight and a close win over Paulie Malignaggi, Adrien Broner says he's comfortable at 147, but will think about fights at 135 or 140, too.

Adrien Broner got past Paulie Malignaggi last night via split decision to win the WBA welterweight title, but the 23-year-old rising star isn't counting out a return to 135 pounds or a move down to 140, nor is he saying that he won't stay at 147.

In short, Broner will go where the "best fight" is:

"Now it's time to go get more belts in someone else's weight class. I don't know if it will be at [welterweight], light welterweight or maybe I'll go down to lightweight. It really don't matter, we're just having fun right now. I felt good at [147]. I was strong as you can see. Whatever is the better fight for me. I don't care what weight it's at. If it's the best fight for me career, that's where we'll be at. But I was comfortable [at 147]."

There is some question as to whether or not Broner's power yet translates to the welterweight division, as though he did push Malignaggi (32-5, 7 KO) back on a few occasions, he never had him in any real danger. At 130 and 135, Broner (27-0, 22 KO) looked like a wrecking ball, a fighter whose single shots could change the course of a fight at any moment.

Broner also says he's going to let the fans pick his next fight, but we'll see about that. There are plenty of ways to skirt around that and still make it look to the rubes like he really let the fans decide his next opponent. It may happen, and it may not. If it doesn't, I assume we'll be implored to ignore that he ever said it. (To be entirely fair to Broner, he was saying he'd do this before the Paulie fight, too.)
