Willie Nelson has spoken about fighting Canelo Alvarez and taking him out after some recent wins, but after tonight's showing against Luciano Cuello, that talk isn't going to be taken seriously by anyone, anywhere.
Nelson survived a tough Cuello, winning on unanimous decision scores of 97-93, 97-93, and 96-94. BLH also had it 97-93 for Nelson, but it was the 6'3" Ohioan who was hurt repeatedly in the fight, managing to either dig through it, or later in the fight, finally holding on and just getting through the night.
Cuello (32-3, 16 KO) was getting hammered a bit in the first two rounds, but turned up the heat and was getting to Nelson (21-1-1, 12 KO) in the third, a round where Nelson also suffered a pretty nasty cut over his right eye. Nelson adopted a more safety-first approach in the middle rounds, doubling up his jab as trainer Jack Loew (profanely and aggressively) suggested, separating himself from Cuello during those frames.
Though Cuello again had Nelson hurt a couple more times, he couldn't put him away or even on the canvas, and Nelson managed to get out tonight with a clear, if relatively unimpressive victory.
