Amir Khan and Devon Alexander appear headed for a December 7 showdown, possibly in Dubai, according to a report yesterday by the Daily Mail. Promoter Richard Schaefer says they've had the discussions and consider Khan, if he were to win, a suitable early 2014 opponent for Floyd Mayweather:
‘We have opened discussions with the ruling family of the Emirates who have made it very clear that they are keen to put on a major boxing event. This is very exciting for Amir and all of us. If he defeats Devon, preferably in style, the next step for him would be against Floyd.'
Khan (28-3, 19 KO) is coming off of a competitive decision win over veteran Julio Diaz, while Alexander (25-1, 14 KO) dominated Lee Purdy in his last fight. If Alexander were to beat Khan, preferably in style, the next step for him would also be against Floyd, most likely.
Of course, all of this would hinge on Mayweather beating Canelo Alvarez on September 14. If that fight is really competitive and Floyd wins, we may also see an immediate rematch. It's at least worth thinking about.
Kevin Cunningham, Alexander's outspoken (that's a nice word) trainer, had this gem:
"Devon has fought in China as a pro and all over the world as an amateur so this wouldn't be anything new. If the price is right, Devon will go to Dubai and put a turban on Khan's head."
Ha, ha, ha! Khan is Muslim! That's hilarious!
