Carl Frampton talks Rigondeaux, Donaire, Santa Cruz, and Quigg

Carl Frampton speaks with BoxNation about potential big fights in his future, as well as his July 20 fight on the Frank Warren bill at Wembley Arena.

BoxNation

Thoughts on Wembley, July 20th. Are you looking forward to that?

Carl Frampton

I'm looking forward to it. I really am. It's a great bill, obviously headlined by Dereck, an exciting fighter looking to get a world title shot. He's had one before, I'm looking to get my first. Get a win on that bill, and then back to Belfast soon after.

BoxNation

What kind of opponent are you looking forward to? Has there been any talk?

Carl Frampton

There's a few names floating about. I don't really want to say until we get something more concrete. I boxed Kiko Martinez who was a good fighter, so I don't want to take a backward step. I wanna be boxing someone at a similar sort of standard to him, or maybe even better. Whoever it's gonna be, they're gonna be a good one.

BoxNation

That win against Martinez, were you surprised by the accolade afterward? Because people in boxing seemed to know about it, but all of a sudden, you beat Martinez and it seemed to open up a lot of peoples eyes.

Carl Frampton

It did a little bit. I'm well-supported in Belfast. People come out and show support and get behind me, but there have been a few doubters, more so on the mainland. I'm starting to change that, starting to change their opinions. I just have to keep winning, basically. There's always gonna be people firing a few negative words your way, but you just have to learn to move past it.

BoxNation

If you keep winning, how far off do you think you are to a world title shot?

Carl Frampton

I think I could have a world title shot my next fight. I don't think it'll come, but that's how closely I think it could happen if I wanted. One more fight, and then potentially a world title fight.

BoxNation

That super bantamweight division is pretty, you've got your Rigondeaux, Donaire, Santa Cruz. It's a tough one to get in.

Carl Frampton

They're all guys I wanna fight. Rigondeaux's the top man. He's the best fighter in the world. But Colombian Jhonatan Romero has the IBF title. We're very, very keen on fighting him. Leo Santa Cruz is fighting Victor Terrazas for the WBC, very keen on that fight. I'm keen on fighting Rigondeaux, but my team want to wait a while, so I'll listen to what they say. I'm not far away from fighting the best, and he's the best, Rigondeaux definitely is.

BoxNation

One name we haven't mentioned, I'm sorry I've got to, but Scott Quigg -- does that fight matter still?

Carl Frampton

I think it does. More so for the fans. I think I'm further on in my career than Scott. He's British champion and I'm European champion. I think he's only ranked with one governing body, the WBA. I'm in the top ten in four. It's a fight that the public wants, so it's a fight I want as well. I wanna please the public all the time. I think Scott wants the fight to be honest, as well, but the people around him don't want it. It'll be a massive fight. It's probably the biggest fight right now in Britain, to be honest. Fury and Price was at one point, but Price getting beat, I guess this is the next big one. I think it's gotta happen, just when? I want it sooner rather than later. We'll have to keep winning. I know I'm gonna do my best to keep winning, I'm sure he will, but I'm just worried that he'll get knocked out before I get my hands on him. And then the fight's not as big. You just have to look at Price and Fury for an example there. There's a chance that it'll get bigger if we keep winning and become world champions, but there's also a chance that he may get beat.

BoxNation

Would you be happy if you had to go to, I dunno, Madison Square Garden or Las Vegas, that must be a fighter's dream to fight for a world title out there.

Carl Frampton

Yeah, of course, but the main thing for me is keeping my fans happy, the people who pay their hard-earned money to come out and show their support and watch my fights. That's who I wanna keep happy. I wanna do what's best for me and my family and career, but obviously Madison Square Garden or Vegas is where you wanna be one day, but at the minute, I'm happy. I'm happy with humble old Belfast.
