This month's rankings update doesn't have a ton of movement, but a few pretty important things to discuss. Click here for the full rankings, from myself and Ryan Bivins.
We'll start with the biggest move.
Lucas Matthysse's three-round wipeout of Lamont Peterson has vaulted him from No. 2 to No. 1, as he trades places with Danny Garcia. I can't speak for Ryan, but I know that for myself, this was a somewhat difficult decision. It came down to this for me: Does Matthysse's win over Peterson mean enough that he should be ranked ahead of Garcia? I say yes, and that's with all due respect to Garcia, a very good young fighter, unbeaten, a titlist with two organizations, and a guy who has good wins so far. Garcia's really good. He didn't lose the mythical top spot, Matthysse took it. The best news here? It looks like they'll settle it in the ring on September 7.
Peterson drops down to No. 5, falling two spots. He's still a quality contender in this division, which is what makes Matthysse's demolition job so impressive.
Guillermo Jones is back in the mix, debuting at No. 4 in our rankings after returning with a big win over Denis Lebedev, who falls from No. 4 to 7. Lateef Kayode is out of the rankings due to inactivity.
