Marco Huck will leave Berlin with his WBO cruiserweight title intact tonight after defeating Ola Afolabi by majority decision in their third bout. Huck retained the title on scores of 117-111, 115-113, and 114-114. BLH had it 116-112 for Huck.
Huck (36-2-1, 25 KO) had by far his best performance in his three bouts against Afolabi (19-3-4, 9 KO), though it's also worth saying that Afolabi had his worst outing in those three fights. The 28-year-old Huck appeared to open up a sizable lead over the first seven rounds, winning at least five of them, both outboxing and outbanging Afolabi, 33, who seemed a bit passive and slow in the early going.
As the fight wore on, though, Afolabi did press his way back into the fight. He had Huck in some trouble in the final third of the bout, but Huck was able to dig in and give some back, too, making his case in a few rounds, though Afolabi took at least two of the last four or five rounds pretty clearly.
In the end, it was too little, too late, as Huck's early dominance made the major difference, and his chin held up to some big swings from the challenger. Of their three fights, this was probably the worst, but it was also a pretty good fight that closed nicely and had both guys feeling the pace at the end of the night. For a couple of guys who know each other so well at this point, this went about as well as could have been reasonably expected. A repeat of their 2012 brawl was always unlikely.
How did you score Huck-Afolabi III, and who would you like to see Käpt'n Huck face next?
