Danny Garcia: 'Matthysse is not the best fighter I've faced'

Danny Garcia discusses his fight on Saturday night with Lucas Matthysse, whether or not he feels disrespected by the picks against him, Matthysse's status among the fighters Garcia has faced, and his work relationship with his outspoken father, Angel.

Question

"Against Devon Alexander and also Zab Judah, he had problems with guys who had a little pop and could move. You seem to have more pop although some people question your ability to box. Your take?"

Danny Garcia

"Me and my dad, we got a great game plan. We've been training hard in the gym, we've been staying disciplined, and we're gonna have a great performance on Saturday night."

Question

"Why do you think people aren't recognizing what you've done with six straight guys? You've been here before, this is nothing new."

Danny Garcia

"You know, I don't know. I don't know. My job is just to go in there and give a great fight for the fans and win the fight. That's my job. I'm not really worried about what people think or they never give me credit or nothing like that."

Question

"Do you have a prediction? Your dad said four or five rounds, you've had some early knockouts in your career."

Danny Garcia

"I say 12 rounds or less. I'm prepared for 12 rounds. I've prepared for a 12-round, disciplined fight."

Question

"Do you have to box because he is so strong and he is so aggressive, is that what your game plan is, to maybe box instead?"

Danny Garcia

"We're gonna mix it up. We'll see how he reacts when he gets hit with a good shot. That will dictate the fight."

Question

"What about facing Matthysse and he's got a big reputation as an avoided guy, talk about this opportunity and what kind of statement you can make."

Danny Garcia

"It's a big fight. It's a fight the fans wanted. It's a fight the network wanted, and I'm excited."

Question

"Did you want the fight, though?"

Danny Garcia

"Yeah, of course I want the fight! That's why I'm here."

Question

"Do you feel he's a bit one-dimensional in regards to being a knockout guy, that you have a more complete game?"

Danny Garcia

"We think he relies a lot on his power, because if he didn't have that power he probably wouldn't be here right now. He knows he has the power, he's gonna try to use it, but my job is to take his power away."

Question

"He's a favorite here at the sports book, why do you think that is, and what do you think people are not appreciating about you?"

Danny Garcia

"He's had a couple good knockouts and he's buzzing in the boxing world right now, so that's how boxing is. They go off your last fight."

Question

"Based on those knockouts, do you think he's been overrated by people based on who he's been knocking out?"

Danny Garcia

"We'll see on Saturday night. I'm ready for a great fight, I'm in great shape. I'm on weight right now. Everything's going good. I'm not struggling. I feel strong, I had a great camp, so I'm gonna go in there Saturday night and fight the fight of my life."

Question

"Danny, he's had two big fights that he lost, had to go back to his country to rejuvenate his career, then came back. You haven't been afforded that opportunity, you fought all of your big fights on TV, and pretty much had to grow up in the public eye. Do you think that helped you?"

Danny Garcia

"I'm 25 years old, but I'm like a young veteran in the game, you know what I'm saying? I've been fighting veterans, I've been fighting strong fighters, I've been fighting fans' fighters, I've been fighting world class fighters. I've been fighting a lot of good fighters, and I've been growing, man. I've been growing. I'm a lot smarter now, and I'm gonna go in there and get the job done."

Question

"Who do you think is taking the biggest step up in terms of the atmosphere here?"

Danny Garcia

"Oh, he is! I'm the best fighter he's ever faced. He's not the best fighter I've ever faced. I've fought way better fighters with skills. He may be the strongest, but he's not the best."

Question

"What about the atmosphere? Is this a natural progression for you, is this a big step?"

Danny Garcia

"I was born for this. This is natural to me. I already know fight week is hectic week with the media, and you can't go according to your schedule because there's a lot of things. That can mess a fighter up when you've got your mind set on something and you've got to do something else. But I'm already mentally prepared for it. I'm here and I'm ready."

Question

"We've seen what your dad has done with guys like Amir Khan and Zab Judah at the final press conferences for your fight. Give us a preview of what you think it's gonna be like for Matthysse, you already said he's gonna have a hard time with the big atmosphere."

Danny Garcia

"My dad is mad right now! He's mad at the media right now, so y'all better watch out!"

Question

"What about Matthysse?"

Danny Garcia

"I dunno, man, 'cause when I stepped to him yesterday, he kinda seemed surprised. He's used to people being scared of him. I'm not scared of nobody."

Question

"In interviews, you've said that you feel he's average, he's ordinary. Why do you feel that way?"

Danny Garcia

"I've fought better fighters than him. Amir Khan is a better fighter than him. He's faster, he has more skill. Boxing is about skill, it's not all about power. If it was all about power, he'd be a world champion right now."

Question

"Do you like having your dad out there sort of being your voice and saying the things that he says and getting under the skin of your opponents?"

Danny Garcia

"That's just him. If he was a quiet man, I'd like it, too. If he's loud, I like him, too. That's just the way he is and just the way it played out to be. We never sat at home and said, 'hey, pop, you're gonna be the loud man, and I'm gonna be the laid back guy.' It's just the way it played out."

Question

"So far you've done something that other fighters haven't done, you haven't played into this hype, this aura of Matthysse, because people see him as this killer. You haven't done that, talk to me about that."

Danny Garcia

"In boxing, it's all about being ready. It's all about being mentally ready and physically ready. I'm mentally ready, I'm physically ready. I know I'm the champion going into this fight. I don't have to do nothin' but be myself in this fight. I don't have to go in there and do nothin' I haven't been doing. I'm gonna go in there and be me."

Question

"Talk to me about this show, and being under Floyd in the co-main event. How do you feel not being in the main event?"

Danny Garcia

"It feels good. I don't have no pressure! I have no pressure! I don't have to worry about selling the stadium out, nothin' like that. The job's done. My job here is just to go in there and fight and defend my title. I have no pressure."

Question

"Do you feel disrespected by how many people are picking against you in this fight?"

Danny Garcia

"Nah, I'm not disrespected. He's had a couple good knockouts, and it's caught the attention of the people, the public. But I'm gonna show the world who's the better fighter. I'm a different kind of animal. He's never fought nobody like me before. We'll see how he reacts when I hit him back."
