Mayweather vs Canelo: Referee and judges named for Sept. 14 bout

Ethan Miller

Kenny Bayless will be the referee, while Dave Moretti, C.J. Ross, and Craig Metcalfe serve as judges for the Mayweather-Canelo fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has made their choices for officials, and neither Floyd Mayweather nor Canelo Alvarez have expressed any concerns about the referee or judges for their September 14 Showtime boxing pay-per-view main event.

Highly-respected veteran Kenny Bayless will be the third man in the ring, which is unlikely to cause any complaints from anyone, as Bayless is regarded as one of the finest officials in all of boxing. Bayless has had sort of a quiet, relaxing year, and actually hasn't been involved in any world title fights in 2013. But he is well-known for recent assignments, including Pacquiao-Marquez IV, Gonzalez-Ponce De Leon, Khan-Garcia, Pacquiao-Mosley, Marquez-Katsidis, and Mayweather-Mosley. He's notable for making a brief mistake in the Pacquiao-Mosley bout, ruling Pacquiao down at one point. He later owned up to the mistake privately to Pacquiao and publicly as well.

CJ Ross is a veteran judge who has handled such momentous occasions as Mundine-McKart, Pacquiao-Bradley, Canelo-Mosley, Nishioka-Marquez, and Khan-Maidana in recent years. She was one of the two judges to cause mass panic in the boxing universe when she scored the Pacquiao-Bradley fight for Tim Bradley, 115-113.

Dave Moretti is another veteran Nevada judge, whose recent notable bouts include Love-Rosado, Rios-Alvarado II, Martirosyan-Lara, Chavez-Martinez, Mundine-McKart, Tarver-Kayode, Mayweather-Cotto, and Kirkland-Molina. Moretti had Mayweather 117-111 over Cotto; Martinez 118-109 over Chavez; Molina leading Kirkland 88-83 when the fight was stopped; and Alvarado 115-113 over Rios.

Craig Metcalfe is a much less established judge out of Canada, who beat out judges from Thailand and Germany to serve as the Impartial Neutral Not From America judges for this fight. He was a judge in Atlantic City for Ward-Froch, Martinez-Williams II, and Pavlik-Martinez; in Argentina for Abregu-Decarie; and in Poland for Klitschko-Adamek. He's inexperienced, relatively speaking, but so what? It's not like the long-established judges do such a great job. Gotta learn somewhere. Get on the horse!
