Boxing Rivalries

I know many people get sick and tired of hearing about a 5th fight between Manny Pacquaio and Juan Manuel Marquez. Don't worry I am not here to convince you that they should fight again. Having said that, I truly believe that the rivalry between those two is one of the best in boxing. Up there with Gatti/Ward and Ali/Frazier.

When Manny and Marquez first got into the ring together, Manny had just come off a stellar victory over Marco Antonio Barrera and Marquez had been on a 13 fight winning streak. From the opening bell I figured it would be a fire fight, but I had no idea that Manny was going to come out the way he did and literally stun everyone by putting Marquez on the canvas 3 times. I vividly remember my entire Mexican household in complete silence in that first round. It was as if someone broke the news that someone in the family just died. Somehow Marquez managed to survive the round and what happened throughout the rest of the fight set the tone for the remainder of their fights. Marquez can steam rolling back into the fight by timing Manny's attack and using that awkward upper cut he has to catch Manny flush, and actually stunning him. Of course this only encouraged Manny more and he became a wild dog in there trying to land anything. You would have thought that by the end of the fight, before the decision, that my family had won the lottery or something. It was chaos in my house. When they announced the draw, I felt it was the perfect decision for such a fight. My family had another opinion...

Like I said earlier... After the 1st round of their 1st fight, the rivalry was born and it set the tone for the remainder fights between these two warriors. In the 2nd fight when Manny was getting caught a little too often early in the fight and then just landed an amazing left cross that instantly dropped Marquez. My house was as silent as a library at that point. Then Marquez was leading the attack once more, only to have Manny land another massive shot that Marquez somehow managed to stay up from. Manny won by a single point and once again my family had a different opinion...

The 3rd fight was the most controversial out of the 4, but once again it was Marquez timing the attack of Manny, but Manny still getting his shots in. Round by round it seemed like it was destined for another draw in their trilogy at that time. Manny was more active and Marquez was more precise. The fight was close once more. The final rounds really decided the match and I didn't care who won. I was just happy that we got a trilogy. Obviously my family had a different opinion on the outcome...

After Manny suffered a controversial lost to Bradley, he once again gave Marquez another chance to get his win. This time... it wasn't about who can win on points. These two wanted to knock each other out and were not looking to go the distance. In the 3rd round, Marquez landed a bomb that he threw from outer space it seemed like and Manny, for the first time by Marquez, had been put on the canvas. The house ERUPTED! Nobody saw that coming. Quickly after that Pacquiao got up and got his combo's going. Pacquiao's attack became really aggressive and eventually became a little too much for Marquez in the 5th round, because Pac landed a beauty straight left hand that got Marquez off balance and touching the canvas. In that same round Pac landed possibly the meanest 1-2 combo I had seen in years on Marquez and Marquez ate it like a beast. Round 6 had Pac on the loose hunting his prey. Landed solid combos and good left hands. It looked like Marquez was about to go down once more. With 2 seconds left, Manny fainted quickly and ran right into one of the most vicious right hands in boxing history. Pac fell face first and the ref called it off. I swear I think my house exploded. The cheering quickly stopped when we noticed Pac was not getting up. He got up eventually and that's when my uncle stood up and made everyone in the house cheers to Manny and Marquez. A lot of people may have not agreed with the outcomes of the first 3 fights, but we all agreed that night that both men, throughout 4 matches in 8 years, gave us history.

At the end of the day when it comes to these two warriors... Nobody even really cares that in the first fight one of the judges did their math wrong which cost Manny a victory. What mattered was that the fight was amazing. To me, these guys are both winners. They built a legacy, got their millions and entertained us all for each time they fought. So I ask all of you... Does it really get any better than that?
