Chavez vs Vera weights: Main eventers ready to go, Orlando Salido overweight but will fight

Orlando Salido missed weight for his featherweight title defense tomorrow night against Vasyl Lomachenko, but Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Bryan Vera are good to go for the main event, and both fights are moving forward.

The story of today's weigh-in from San Antonio is about a missed weight, but it's not Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Chavez, in fact, appeared to be in very good shape for tomorrow night's super middleweight rematch with Bryan Vera in the HBO World Championship Boxing main event. Instead, it was now former WBO featherweight titleholder Orlando Salido who unfortunately stole the show at the weigh-in this afternoon.

Salido (40-12-2, 28 KO) weighed in at 128¼, or 2¼ pounds over the limit, for his title defense against Ukraine's Vasyl Lomachenko (1-0, 1 KO), who came in at 125¼. The fight will go on, and Lomachenko can win the title with a victory, but Salido is fighting for money and glory only, and $15,000 of his purse will go to Lomachenko.

The 33-year-old Salido looked either indifferent or disinterested in making weight as soon as he stepped on the scale, appearing to know for sure that he wasn't going to make weight, and having that look that suggested he'd stopped trying a few days ago. At his age (not that he's ancient or anything), making 126 was going to become a problem sooner than later, most likely, and that time has come. If he didn't kill himself trying to burn weight off, it likely won't be any disadvantage tomorrow night.

Chavez (47-1-1, 32 KO) and Vera (23-7, 14 KO) both looked in good shape for their main event, each man weighing in a half-pound under the super middleweight limit, tipping the scales at 167½.

Chavez, 28, was asked about his weight by Top Rank's Crystina Poncher, and simply said, "I made the weight. I win tomorrow." The 32-year-old Vera told Crystina, "I'm glad he made the weight. It's a fair fight. I just know I'm going to win again."
