Canelo Alvarez's team alerted Alfredo Angulo's on Saturday morning that their fighter would not be able to make the 154-pound limit set for tomorrow night's Showtime pay-per-view main event, and agreed to pay a $100,000 fine to move the limit up to 155 pounds even, which Alvarez made.
Trainer Virgil Hunter believes it looks bad for boxing for Canelo to not make weight and to be able to pay his way out of it and go on with the fight:
"It sends a real bad message to other fighters who start making big money - that this is okay. I'm just getting off an experience like that with Edwin Rodriguez [who failed to make weight for Andre Ward] and it's an unfortunate thing. If it was the poor guy not making the weight [in this fight], they would have run him through the mud."
The fighters will also weigh in again on Saturday morning, and there's a one-way possible fine. If Alvarez weighs over 168 pounds on Saturday morning, he will be hit for more money. Angulo will also weigh in again in the morning, but he cannot be fined for weighing over 168.
