Canelo Alvarez's older brother Ricardo opened little brother's pay-per-view event tonight with a loss to Sergio Thompson over 10 rounds. Thompson scored two knockdowns in the bout en route to winning a decision on scores of 97-91, 95-93, and 95-93. BLH had it 96-92 for Thompson.
Thompson (29-3, 26 KO) dropped Alvarez (23-3-3, 14 KO) in the third round, knocking him into the ropes, which referee Vic Drakulich rightly ruled a knockdown, as only the ropes held Alvarez up. In the eighth round, Alvarez was dropped hard on a well-timed right hand that came in over top of a jab. The knockdowns sealed the fight for Thompson, as it would have been a majority draw without them.
It was a quality action fight that opened the night well and set a good tone. It also further solidified that Ricardo Alvarez is not a real contender, as he was beaten by a guy who came in on nine days' notice. But I think few would argue with Ricardo being featured on TV again if matched against guys like this, because he comes to scrap.
