Omar Figueroa retained his WBC lightweight title tonight, questionably overcoming former amateur rival Jerry Belmontes over 12 rounds on Showtime. Figueroa won on scores of 116-112, 118-110, and 113-115. BLH had it 116-112 for Belmontes.
Figueroa (23-0-1, 17 KO) didn't look his normal, hyper-aggressive self, and blamed Belmontes (19-4, 5 KO) for running and making it more boring than the normal Omar Figueroa affair. To be entirely fair, Belmontes did run in some rounds, avoiding action, but in many of them, he simply outboxed Figueroa, who looked flat and a bit lost at times.
This may not really be a robbery, in that there's a decent argument to score it for Figueroa, as you could argue that Belmontes didn't step on the gas enough, and might have given the fight away in a few rounds. But it's pretty much impossible to have seen this fight 10 rounds to two for Figueroa, which judge David Mendoza managed.
The Showtime scores were 115-114 Belmontes (Al Bernstein), 116-112 Belmontes (Steve Farhood), and 114-114 (Daniel Jacobs).
How did you score it?
