Here's my homage to Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez. I first heard about him on BLH 5-6 years ago when he fought Kermit Cintron. Cintron was still a semi-relevant welterweight at the time and was trying to rebuild his career. I remember Scott saying that Martinezis a quick-featherfist that will box Cintron's ears off! At first I didn't like him because he had his hands down and for some reason that fight he seemed to have orange skin from some fake spray tan. However, he was slick and hard to hit and dropped Cintron (actually Kermit was counted out) and then robbed with a draw. He was on my radar from that point on - he was quick, fast, and smart. My favorite moment of his was the Williams 1 & 2 fights; he was so slick in first one. Also, the Pavlik fight was quite the accomplishment -he was so much smaller. He had some of the fastest feet in a weight classnext to Pacquiao - an ex-cyclist and soccer player. He was able to score two big fights and make some respectable defenses before tearing a ligament in his knee which was the beginning of the end. The real end was sad but true, and i honor his heart and skill. He'll always be one of my favorite fighters... wish him the best. I also loved how he dropped his hands at his most confident and would shrug his shoulders and tease the opponent with raising his eyebrows... then adjust his trunks and smile/wink on the way back to his corner or how he'd smile mockingly every time he was hit hard or knocked down from a shot sans first Cotto KD where he knew he was buzzed and frustrate - the swagger was gone but not the heart. Maravilla!
