The Super 8 heavyweight tournament went down last night and for those who are interested, here's what happened:
In the first round, Hasim "The Rock" Rahman was outpointed by kiwi heavyweight kickboxer-turned-boxer, and 7 to 1 underdog, Antz "Notorious" Nansen (Surprise, surprise). Nansen used movement and his hand speed to keep away from Rahman's right hand, and was a lot crisper with his combinations.
Michael Sprott and Martin "The Entertainer" Rogan fought to a decision in favour of Sprott. Prizefighter experience was shining through as both were familiar with this format (3 x 3 minute rounds). Although rocked at one stage, Sprott managed to control the ring and win the fight.
Alonzo "Big Zo" Butler, the biggest fighter weighing in at 134kg, lost in a shock defeat to kiwi wild card Brice Ritani-Coe, who had a lot of support from UFC and boxing stars (Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin to name a few). Ritani-Coe looked sharp, avoided most of Butler's haymakers and beat him with a decision win, being the more active fighter.
In the last quarter final Kali "Mean Hands" Meehan bested Australian wildcard Hunter Sam in a points decision. It was rather close as Meehan battled Sam's unorthodox style, getting clipped a few times, for the win.
Michael Sprott outpointed Antz Nansen to a decision showing his Prizefighter experience, imposing his will and controlling the ring.
Kali Meehan beat Brice Ritani-Coe to a decision, with Ritani-Coe being rocked by Meehan's power punches in the first round and hitting the canvas. The remaining rounds were very close, however Meehan was seen the victor in the eyes of the judges.
As a shocking result, Kali Meehan lived up to his nickname "Mean Hands" knocking out the former PrizeFighter champion Michael Sprott in the first round. In an exchange, Meehan clipped Sprott with a powerful right hand that put him on wobbly legs. After being knocked to the ground, and a remaining 22 seconds in the round, Meehan knocked him down again to have Sprott's corner throw in the towel.
Kali "Mean Hands" Meehan is New Zealand's Super 8 Heavyweight Champion - picking up some nice prize money as well...
