HBO and K2 promotions are striking while the iron is hot, and in this case, it means bringing Gennady Golovkin back into the ring and on the air in October or November. Even though Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) knocked out former middleweight belt holder Daniel Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) a mere two weeks ago, K2 and HBO aim to have Golovkin's return date squared away in the next week or so. K2, Golovkin's promoter, prefers October.
Choosing a date is the easy part. Finding a quality opponent willing to step into the ring with Golovkin is going to be a challenge. Golovkin, the WBA middleweight belt holder, has knocked out 17 opponents in a row, a streak that stretches back to November 2008. Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), holder of Ring Magazine's middleweight championship title and the WBC middleweight belt reportedly has December 13th reserved for his next fight, so it's unlikely that he will face Golovkin in October or November. James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) or Cotto seem to be the shortlist of next opponents for Canelo Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs), so Canelo's out.
There is a possibility of a unification bout with 40-year old IBF middleweight belt holder Sam Soliman (44-11, 18 KOs). There was talk however, of Soliman making his first defense of his belt against Jermaine Taylor in December. There's been no official announcement yet, but this boxing and Jermain Taylor is managed by Al Haymon, which means anything can happen.
Whomever the opponent is, K2 Promotions managing director Tom Loeffler wants Golovkin's next fight to be on the west coast in the hopes that it will help build an audience for the Kazakhstan fighter.
