Three days ago, Kell Brook wasn't on anyone's radar to face Floyd Mayweather, and even a fight with Amir Khan still seemed terribly unlikely. Now, both ideas are in play, and Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn says he'll look into both, starting with talks with the Khan camp.
"For me it is an outdoor event for spring or summer 2015," Hearn added. It is the same sort of size as Carl Froch against George Groves and it would be good to see it at Wembley or Bramall Lane or Old Trafford. I think talks will begin with Khan's camp possibly this week."
As for Mayweather, who returns September 13 in a rematch against Marcos Maidana, that's more of a pipe dream, but Brook is at least in the picture, as Shawn Porter was before Saturday's fight:
"I think you have to say Kell is now in the running to face Floyd Mayweather. Everyone in the division wants to fight Floyd, but if you hold a world title then you are more likely to face him than if you don't. He's an obvious opponent and Mayweather is a target for 2015."
Brook (33-0, 22 KO) has wanted to fight Khan for years now, but Amir always said that Brook needed to get a bigger name, needed to pick up bigger wins, before he'd entertain the idea. Khan (29-3, 19 KO) has already said he does want the fight with Brook, but Amir is looking to return late this year, which could in theory risk not just a spring 2015 fight with Mayweather for Khan, but what might be the "backup plan" against Kell Brook.
