The WBC just made Viktor Postol (26-0, 11 KOs) a mandatory challenger for Danny's 140lb green strap. WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman stated that Postol's knockout of Selcuk Aydin this past May was the final elimination bout for the right to get a shot the reigning champ. And look, Postol didn't even have to be ranked number seventy-something to get a chance at Garcia! He happens to be rated top 5 in the division. It makes me wonder what is the world coming to when champions are actually made to compete against worthy challengers.
I'm not saying the WBC ordered the Salka fight or anything, but still...
"Viktor Postal won the final elimination bout by knockout of Selcuk Aydin," said Sulaiman, adding that free negotiations for the Garcia-Postal bout were ordered on Friday. "So if there is no agreement, then there will be a purse bid on Sept. 12 in Las Vegas. That is the same thing that goes for Stiverne and Wilder."
The real question is whether or not Danny will actually stick around at 140 to make that fight happen. Its seemed pretty clear that it was time for him to move on to the welterweight division where big names and big money fights await. Should Garcia vacate and move on, Postol would take on Lucas Matthysse instead.
"This is a mandatory title defense, but I'm sure that both Danny Garcia and his father [and trainer Angel Garcia] are looking for the easier fights like the one that he just had with Rod Salka," said Vadmin Kornilov (Postol's Manager).
"I think that if they don't want to bring the competitive fights to the division then they should give up the title and go do something else. Postol is ready to fight anybody and he's ready to put himself in dangerous fights. If Garcia is going up in weight, then we'll fight Lucas Matthysse. He's the next one in line."
Does anyone think Danny should and will stick around for a fight with Postol? It seems at this point it poses a bigger risk than the reward would merit. So if he does indeed vacate, who would you like to see him against first at 147?
