Junior's team notified the WBC yesterday that their fighter isn't interested in fighting Anthony Dirrell for their 168 pound belt. As the mandatory challenger, it was Chavez Jr's right to get a crack at the belt Dirrell just lifted from Sakio Bika.
But, he's passed on the opportunity and likely won't fight again this year.
There was some early talk about a fight with Carl Froch, but Chavez and his team don't appear to be pursuing those negotiations, either.
Chavez has fought just twice in the past two calendar years, both against Bryan Vera. Before that, of course, was his failed title bid against Sergio Martinez in November of 2012.
As Dan Rafael points out, Chavez Jr has now turned down, or just apathetically ignored, two super middleweight title opportunities in recent months, as well as a potential showdown with Gennady Golovkin.
As much as some of us would love to see Chavez Jr in the ring (myself included), let's be honest about things. He's probably set financially, and boxing is just, like, really hard work and hurts a lot. So, why bother?
It's frustrating to see anyone squander great opportunities, but perhaps he doesn't see much to gain from fighting on. It's pretty clear he's not driven to be the greatest (or even, like, really good), so maybe it's best he focus on enjoying life outside the ring.
