Lightweight prospect and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell will be back in action on October 25, headlining at the Ice Arena in his hometown of Hull, England, with Michael Katsidis making his return to the United Kingdom on the bill, as well.
Campbell (7-0, 5 KO) will face Argentine veteran Daniel Eduardo Brizuela (26-3-2, 8 KO) in a 10-round fight. Brizuela, 28, has lost two of his last three, including a fight in the United Kingdom against Tommy Coyle in February. The 26-year-old Campbell will be looking to pick up his first pro belt, as the vacant WBA Inter-Continental title is on the line.
Perhaps more interesting for the majority of boxing fans is Katsidis (30-6, 24 KO) climbing back into the squared circle. The 34-year-old Aussie warrior will be facing the aforementioned Coyle (19-2, 8 KO) in a 12-round lightweight bout, with a minor IBF belt at stake.
Katsidis returned to action this year after two years out of the ring, and has beaten Eddy Comaro and Graham Earl, both fights taking place in Australia, and neither meaning much at all. Comaro is a journeyman, while Earl is a highly faded 36 years old, and hadn't fought in five years, either.
Coyle, 24, suffered his first defeat in the opening round of a Prizefighter tournament in 2012, dropping a three-rounder to Gary Sykes, and was beaten by Derry Mathews in 2013, a failed bid by Coyle to capture the Commonwealth title. Despite the fact that Coyle is hardly a top star of the division, he represents at least some danger to Katsidis, who is well past his prime.
That said, Katsidis has had great success fighting in the United Kingdom in the past. In 2007, he stopped Graham Earl after five rounds in their thrilling first fight, and in 2010 completely bulldozed a then-unbeaten Kevin Mitchell in three rounds. He did lose his last time in the UK, however, dropping a decision to Ricky Burns in November 2011.
