One question I imagine boxing fans who ever discuss the sport with non/potential fans truly dread is, "So who's the champion?" or, "So he's the champion?" Because, like, you can say, "This guy," or, "Yes," but if they start watching, you know they're going to eventually start hearing that there are other guys who are the champion.
Boxing is overrun with "world champions," the vast majority of the claims dubious at best. With four sanctioning bodies (WBC, IBF, WBA, and WBO) all claiming world champions in each of the 17 weight classes, plus some of them declaring multiple world champions within a single division, it's nearly impossible to follow unless you want to fill your dork brain with this knowledge for the purpose of trying in vain to explain it to others.
But in case you're wondering, "Who holds what belt?" on a lazy Sunday afternoon like today, good news! I've compiled a quick little reference you can bookmark. I'm recognizing the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO titles, plus the RING Magazine titles (which in truth I don't see as particularly better than anyone else's belts at this point, as much as I'd like to because the process is still better, but it's hardly flawless), and I've noted the WBA's "regular" champions and such in the case that they have more than one "world" champion in a given division.
Interim/silver/whatever else titles are just not recognized, because those are an even bigger mess that I recommend everyone ignore, including you supernerds.
Anyway, here's the list. Bookmark it for reference, or remember that it's under the Library tab on the front page. Enjoy! Or get mad about how stupid it is that this is necessary!
