The cheetahpants September 2014 Boxing Rankings

Apologies to all for missing my August update. First work got in the way, and once work cooled down, I was behind 3 weeks on my boxing viewing. Once I'd caught up on that... here we are end of August, so I might as well wait a week until September.

Previous months rankings can be found here: http://www.sbnation.com/users/cheetahpants/blog

---

Rule #1: The titlists are separate.
Rule #2: I made these rankings with Boxrec + my experience having viewed the fights or surveyed public opinion on the internet.
Rule #3: You win you're in, you lose you're out - unless your win or loss is a bullshit boxing robbery.
Rule #4: If you're inactive for 9 months with nothing scheduled, you're out.

"In the dugout" implies that they're waiting on a win to become ranked in the top #10. Decided to put a little more explanation into the dugout, since theoretically in a top#15 situation, not too many fighters should find themselves here.

HEAVYWEIGHT:

WBA/WBO/IBF:
Wladimir Klitscko
WBC: Bermane Stiverne

#1. Kubrat Pulev
#2. Tyson Fury
#3. Carlos Takam
#4. Alexander Povetkin
#5. Dereck Chisora
#6. Deontay Wilder
#7. Steve Cunningham
#8. Bryant Jennings
#9. Andy Ruiz
#10. Erkan Teper

CHANGES:
* Vyacheslav Glazkov had a pretty bad outing against Derric Rossy. So bad in fact, I haven't seen anyone who had him winning. I saw a lot of people with either a draw, or Rossy winning. But nobody I could find with Glazkov winning. A loss is a loss, despite officially winning, so Glazkov drops into the dugout.
* Bryant Jennings ... while I did indeed have him beating Mike Perez... he turned in a rather lackluster performance. This drops him a spot, since I'm pretty sure Steve Cunningham could whoop him.
* Lucas Browne - The #10 spot is a tenuous thing in any division. Browne turned in a pretty garbage performance against Andriy Rudenko, so this drops him out of the top#10. Which makes room for Ruiz and Teper respectively.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
Vyacheslav Glazkov - discussed above.
Tomasz Adamek - hasn't fought for 5 months. A fight with Artur Szpilka in Poland is rumored.
Odlanier Solis - hasn't fought for 5 months. A rematch with Tony Thompson is rumored.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
September 20: Andy Ruiz vs Siarhei Liakhovich
October 18: Steve Cunningham vs TBA
October 24: Carlos Takam vs Alexander Povetkin
November 15: Wladimir Klitschko vs Kubrat Pulev
November 22: Tyson Fury vs Dereck Chisora II

CRUISERWEIGHT:

IBF: Yoan Hernandez
WBO: Marco Huck
WBC: Krzysztof Wlodarczyk
WBA: Denis Lebedev

#1. Thabiso Mchunu
#2. Ovill McKenzie
#3. Ola Afolabi
#4. Grigory Drozd
#5. Rakhim Chakhkiev
#6. Tony Bellew
#7. Ilunga Makabu
#8. Nathan Cleverly
#9. Yunier Dorticos
#10. Pawel Kolodziej

CHANGES:
The changes are that Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly won some fights, which push them both up and David Aloua out.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
Firat Arslan - honestly? I had his fight with Hernandez as a draw. But I've no complaint if either guy won this fight. Hernandez wound up getting it. It's amazing to think that Arslan is still a contender at the Cruiserweight division with his simple style and advanced age.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
September 20: Thabiso Mchunu vs Garrett Wilson
September 27: Krzysztof Wlodarczyk vs Grigory Drozd, Denis Lebedev vs Pawel Kolodziej

---

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT:

IBF/WBA: Bernard Hopkins
WBC: Adonis Stevenson
WBO: Sergey Kovalev

#1. Jean Pascal
#2. Juergen Braehmer
#3. Isaac Chilemba
#4. Gabriel Campillo
#5. Nadjib Mohammedi
#6. Chad Dawson
#7. Eleider Alvarez
#8. Ryno Liebenberg
#9. Humberto Savigne
#10. Dmitry Sukhotsky

CHANGES:
Blake Caparello, Thomas Williams, and Robert Berridge all got blown out of the water...
Campillo advanced as a result of beating Williams.
But as a result of Berridge and Caparello exiting, this makes room for Savigne and Liebenberg at the bottom.
Thomas Oosthuizen and Edwin Rodriguez drop out of the dugout for having nothing scheduled after 9 months inactivity.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
Andrzej Fonfara - 3 months since he lost to Stevenson.
Beibut Shumenov - 4 months since his loss to Hopkins.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
September 15: Dmitry Sukhotsky vs TBA
October 25: Eleider Alvarez vs Ryno Liebenberg
November 1: Andrzej Fonfara vs TBA
November 8: Bernard Hopkins vs Sergey Kovalev

---

SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT:

WBA: Andre Ward
IBF: Carl Froch
WBO: Arthur Abraham
WBC: Anthony Dirrell

#1. James DeGale
#2. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
#3. Robert Stieglitz
#4. Rogelio Medina
#5. Fedor Chudinov
#6. Gilberto Ramirez
#7. Ezequiel Maderna
#8. Callum Smith
#9. Rocky Fielding
#10. Christopher Rebrasse

CHANGES:
First and foremost, Anthony Dirrell de-throned Sakio Bika to become the new WBC champion.
J'Leon Love got blown up by Rogelio Medina.. which removes Love and shoots Medina up the ranks.
Stieglitz won his comeback fight.
Rocky Fielding debuts after notching a decent win in July.
These changes push Mohoumadi and Vlasov back out.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
George Groves - only 3 months removed from his loss to Froch, but has a comeback scheduled for September.
Lucian Bute - lost back in January, has a comeback fight scheduled for December.
Sakio Bika - a rugged fighter, but we will see what the future holds for him after losing his world title to Anthony Dirrell.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
September 20: George Groves vs Christopher Rebrasse
September 27: Arthur Abraham vs Paul Smith
October 4: Callum Smith vs TBA
December 6: Lucian Bute vs TBA

MIDDLEWEIGHT:

WBC: Miguel Cotto
WBA: Gennady Golovkin
IBF: Sam Soliman
WBO: Peter Quillin

#1. Martin Murray
#2. Matt Korobov
#3. Daniel Jacobs
#4. Marco Antonio Rubio
#5. David Lemiuex
#6. Billy Joe Saunders
#7. Matthew Macklin
#8. Dmitry Chudinov
#9. Hassan N'Dam
#10. Gabriel Rosado

CHANGES:
Daniel Geale got blown out by Gennady Golovkin.
Daniel Jacobs moved up after beating Jarrod Fletcher.
Saunders moved up after beating Blandamura.
Hassan N'Dam has been doing that thing where you take fights in the weight class just above yours because you don't feel like making weight, but you're really part of the weight class below where you've been fighting at. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
Also... Gabriel Rosado beat Brian Vera in a quasi-boxing match. This is enough for me to put Rosado in at #10. Sure, the gloves were different, the ring was spherical, and there were 7x two-minute rounds. But Gabe Rosado still beat Brian Vera in a boxing match.
Also, despite winning his last fight, all of the above occuring is not enough for Caleb Truax to make it into the top#10.
These changes bump out Shibata and Heiland.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
Sergio Martinez - only 3 months removed from his drubbing at the hands of Cotto. Will he fight again, or retire?
Felix Sturm - 3 months since he lost to Soliman and the same question - keep going or hang 'em up?
Daniel Geale - a scant 1 month from his blasting at the hands of Golovkin.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
October 1: Hassan N'Dam vs Curtis Stevens
October 8: Sam Soliman vs Jermain Taylor
October 18: Gennady Golovkin vs Marco Antonio Rubio
October 25: Martin Murray vs Domenico Spada
November 1: Peter Quillin vs Matt Korobov
December 13: Miguel Cotto vs TBA

---

LIGHT MIDDLEWEIGHT:

WBA/WBC: Floyd Mayweather
IBF: Carlos Molina
WBO: Demetrius Andrade

#1. Canelo Alvarez
#2. Ishe Smith
#3. Jermell Charlo
#4. K9 Bundrage
#5. Austin Trout
#6. Vanes Martirosyan
#7. James Kirkland
#8. Joshua Clottey
#9. Zaurbek Baysangurov
#10. Sergey Rabchenko

CHANGES:
I had Canelo beating Lara fair and square so this drops Lara into the dugout.
Austin Trout re-debuts at #5 after a rocky comeback.
Willie Nelson drops out of #10 after a somewhat pedestrian performance, making room again for Rabchenko.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
Erislandy Lara - lost a close decision to Canelo not really even 2 months ago.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
October 11: Carlos Molina vs K9 Bundrage
November 12: Sergey Rabchenko vs Anthony Mundine
December 13: Canelo Alvarez vs TBA

---

WELTERWEIGHT:

WBC/WBA: Floyd Mayweather
WBO: Manny Pacquiao
IBF: Kell Brook

#1. Juan Manuel Marquez
#2. Marcos Maidana
#3. Robert Guerrero
#4. Keith Thurman
#5. Devon Alexander
#6. Amir Khan
#7. Leonard Bundu
#8. Carlos Abregu
#9. Chris van Heerden
#10. Jojo Dan

CHANGES:
Kell Brook defeated Shawn Porter for the IBF title.
Leonard Bundu defeated Frankie Gavin.
These changes make room for Jojo Dan at the bottom.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
Paulie Malignaggi - nothing in the 4 months since his loss. I think he might retire.
Timothy Bradley - nothing from him in the 4 months since his loss to Pacquiao.
Shawn Porter - I didn't particular have the fight with Kell Brook as really even close. We will see what he does from here.
Frankie Gavin - this fight with Bundu seemed a bridge too soon.. Gavin might want to consider dropping down to 140lbs? He didn't have any power at all to hurt a damn near 40 year old man.
Brandon Rios - I had the fight with Chaves as dead even when it was stopped. To me, Rios has only won a single fight in 3 years.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
September 13: Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana II
October 1: Chris van Heerden vs TBA
November 22: Manny Pacquiao vs Chris Algieri
December 6: Kell Brook vs TBA, Amir Khan vs TBA

---

LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT:

WBA/WBC: Danny Garcia
WBO: Chris Algieri
IBF: Lamont Peterson

#1. Lucas Matthyse
#2. Ruslan Provodnikov
#3. Viktor Postol
#4. Adrien Broner
#5. Mauricio Herrera
#6. Hank Lundy
#7. Cesar Cuenca
#8. Antonio DeMarco
#9. Keita Obara
#10. Jessie Vargas

CHANGES:
I dropped Jessie Vargas to #10. Despite "winning" his last fight.. a lot of people had him losing. I saw a few people who had Vargas winning. I wasn't one of them. He loses a lot of rank for this.. but won't drop into the dugout entirely.
Hank Lundy returns.. he seemed to be waffling between Lightweight and Light Welterweight for a while. But he's only had one fight at Lightweight in 18 months.
Humberto Soto drops a lot... in fact, entirely out of the top#10. Probably because he hasn't beaten anyone top#100 in the world in over 18 months.
DeMarco stays relevant with a recent win.
Keita Obara pops into the top#10 after picking up the Oriental-Pacific regional title in his native Japan.
These changes bump out Dulorme.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
Khabib Allakhverdiev - his close decision loss to Vargas was only 5 months ago.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
September 6: Lucas Matthyse vs Roberto Ortiz, Adrien Broner vs Emmanuel Taylor

---

LIGHTWEIGHT:

IBF: Miguel Vazquez
WBO: Terence Crawford
WBA: Richar Abril
WBC: Omar Figueroa

#1. Ray Beltran
#2. Denis Shafikov
#3. Miguel Roman
#4. Kevin Mitchell
#5. Dejan Zlaticanin
#6. Petr Petrov
#7. Xolisani Ndongeni
#8. Dierry Jean
#9. Yoshitaka Kato
#10. Edis Tatli

CHANGES:
Omar Figueroa said he is going to move up to 140lbs.. but has not vacated his title yet, so.
As mentioned at 140lbs, Hank Lundy is there now.
Rustam Nugaev got beaten by Shafikov... so this drops Nugaev out and re-instates Shafikov.
Who knows what weight class Edner Cherry is fighting at, anymore? He's only fought once in the last year, and it was at Welterweight.
These changes make room for Kato and Tatli at the bottom.

WAITING IN THE DUGOUT:
Ricky Burns - he's seriously barely won a single fight in 2 years.
Yuriorkis Gamboa - he should really drop back down to 130lbs.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
September 13: Miguel Vazquez vs Mickey Bey
September 20: Richar Abril vs Edis Tatli
September 27: Dierry Jean vs Daniel Ruiz
October 4: Ricky Burns vs TBA
November 29: Terence Crawford vs Ray Beltran

Belmontes drops out after losing to Cotto the lesser.
Pedraza works his way in after a decent August win.
Sergio Thompson makes his way in after waffling about at various weights.

Orlando Salido - even though he won his last fight at 126lbs and weighed-in over, he still needs to win a proper fight at 130lbs to be ranked. This fight is coming in September.

UPCOMING FIGHTS:
September 20: Orlando Salido vs Terdsak Kokietgym

Sonjica beat Gasca which moves Sonjica up and drops Gasca out.
Montiel hasn't fought at 122lbs for over a year. Dropping him out.
These changes make room for Oguni, Servania, and Vargas at the bottom.
