Miguel Cotto's first fight under the Roc Nation banner will take place on June 6, and El Nuevo Dia in Puerto Rico is reporting that Cornelius "K9" Bundrage is the likely opponent.
Cotto, 34, hasn't fought since last June, when he smashed a clearly limited (health-wise) Sergio Martinez over 10 rounds, gaining a stoppage win to pick up the WBC middleweight title, as well as the lineal championship of the division. The fight was criticized afterward because of Martinez clearly having issues with his surgically repaired knee. Cotto (39-4, 32 KO) has also caught some flak this year for dragging his feet negotiating a fight with Canelo Alvarez, which led to Alvarez and Golden Boy abandoning the idea and signing a May 9 deal to fight James Kirkland instead.
The opponent here isn't likely to garner a ton of respect, either. Bundrage, 41, does hold the IBF junior middleweight title, and is a credible fighter. But he's also seen as a second-tier fighter at best, and this is a big step back from the Canelo idea, to say the last.
Bundrage (34-5, 19 KO) last fought in October, when he went to Mexico and dominated against Carlos Molina to win the IBF belt for a second time.
What do you think of the fight? Is Cotto avoiding top fighters like Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin? Is he playing it too safe? Or is he just being a businessman and doing what is expected at this stage of his career?
