Chris Eubank Jr. claimed a “world title” upon his return to middleweight, and now he’s on the hunt for one with some actual legitimacy. The interim WBA champion tells Sky Sports that he wants to face one of his fellow WBA champs.
“I’m No. 1 contender for the WBA world titles. So Canelo has the ‘super’ version and Ryota Murata has the ‘regular’ version. I’m interim WBA world champion, so those are the fights that make sense. I want those belts. Charlo, Golovkin, all these guys with belts in my division, whoever I can get fast.”
Eubank (29-2, 22 KO) spent nearly three years at 168 after knocking out Tom Doran, scoring notable wins over Arthur Abraham, Avni Yildirim, and James DeGale alongside a competitive loss to George Groves in the WBSS semifinals. His return to 160 last december looked to be a rough one after a strong start from Matt Korobov, but the former amateur ace threw out his shoulder in the second round, leaving Eubank the owner of dubious hardware.
Canelo’s in the midst of a legal fustercluck, though Murata doesn’t seem busy at the moment. Even if Eubank doesn’t land a marquee matchup, though, he intends to compete before year’s end.
