Nathan Cleverly wins European light heavyweight title with dominant performance
Unbeaten Welshman Nathan Cleverly dominated Italy's Antonio Brancalion today in London, winning the vacant European light heavyweight title with a fifth round stoppage.
Cleverly (19-0, 9 KO) used his speed to great effect, pounding Brancalion early with some good body work and a left hook, then switching things around in the second part of the fight by destroying Brancalion at will with a right hand lead in the final two rounds especially. Brancalion (32-8-2, 8 KO) went down right before the bell in the fourth, and as he was really putting up no fight and getting tagged repeatedly in the fifth, the fight was stopped.
Cleverly may well already be top 10 in the world at 175, and if not, he's just barely outside the rankings. He's really a very promising fighter who has much more than domestic or European ability -- he's got the tools to be a major player on the world stage, and could be a big part of the future at 175 pounds.
On the undercard, Kevin Mitchell (31-0, 23 KO) stayed unbeaten with an easy second round knockout of Ignacio Mendoza (27-6-2, 18 KO). Mitchell floored Mendoza about halfway into the second round after a tentative and tactical opening frame from both, and Mendoza couldn't beat the count.
Also featured on the Sky broadcast were British prospects Frankie Gavin and James DeGale, who both won big. Gavin won a six-round shutout decision over veteran Peter McDonagh, while DeGale flattened Matthew Barr in the second round with three knockdowns.
Heavyweight Derek Chisora also made a statement with a second round knockout of Carl Baker, and lightweight prospect Liam Walsh improved to 7-0 (6 KO) with a fourth round stoppage of Sid Razak (4-41, 1 KO, and yes that's a real record).
Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Nathan Cleverly v. Antonio Brancalion
Starting at 3pm ET we'll be bringing live, round-by-round coverage, scoring and analysis from the "Night of the Champions" card at Wembley Arena in London, televised by Sky Sports.
The main event features Nathan Cleverly and Antonio Brancalion in what frankly should be a mismatch to decide the vacant European light heavyweight title, but there's plenty more on the card, too. Contending lightweight Kevin Mitchell (30-0, 22 KO) takes on Ignacio Mendoza (27-5-2, 18 KO) in the main co-feature, and top UK prospects James DeGale and Frankie Gavin will be in action, too. There are a lot of Frank Warren's best prospects on the bill (including the Walsh brothers), but who gets on TV will depend. If you hadn't yet heard, Danny Williams pulled out of his fight with Derek Chisora, which was scheduled for this show. Chisora faces Carl Baker now, fittingly enough. Baker is the nobody who upset Williams in the Prizefighter tournament last year.

Frank Warren cards in February and March shake up
Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Derek Chisora will get a chance to make a bit of a splash on February 13 when he faces BBBofC heavyweight titlist Danny Williams.
Chisora (11-0, 6 KO) was set to fight Matt Skelton on that card, and Williams was to take on Sam Sexton. But Sexton suffered a cut on his hand in training, giving Chisora a bump up the ladder. Williams (41-8, 31 KO) seemed set to retire after an upset loss to Carl Baker in the Prizefighter tournament last October, but has decided to make a final go of it.
Chisora, 26, was born in Zimbabwe and turned pro in 2007. Thus far he's cut through the opposition fairly easily, including a win in 2008 over Sexton (TKO-6). Skelton was to be a decent step up in competition, and Williams will serve as the same, though both Skelton and Williams may be on their last legs.
In addition, light heavyweight prospect-contender Nathan Cleverly's fight against Antonio Brancalion has been moved from March 12 to February 13, joining Williams-Chisora. Cleverly (18-0, 8 KO) is looking like the real deal for sure, and is hoping to get a world title shot before the end of 2010. Brancalion (32-7-2, 8 KO) should realistically be much challenge. The fight will be for the vacant European light heavyweight title.
That fight switches dates with welterweight Kell Brook's battle with Poland's Krzysztof Bienias. That fight will now headline in Liverpool on March 12. Bienias has two wins over Sven Paris and losses to Junior Witter and Oktay Urkal, and little else of which to speak. Shouldn't be much more than a gatekeeper fight for the promising Brook.
Sexton-Williams, Brook-Jennings on February 13 in London
A big British card will come around on February 13, as Frank Warren has set up a double main event in London with an undercard featuring many of the top UK prospects.
In one feature, heavyweights Sam Sexton and Danny Williams will clash. Sexton (13-1, 6 KO) showed real improvement in his second battle with Martin Rogan in November, and the Commonwealth champ will look to add Williams' British title to his collection. Williams (41-8, 31 KO) was shocked in the first round of the Prizefighter 8 tournament in October, losing to Carl Baker. And it wasn't just that it was a three-round format and thus flukes are easy; Williams was down twice in the first round.
I think in his prime, Williams is too good for Sexton, but at 36 and clearly faded, the young, strong, improving Sexton seems at first glance to be too big a challenge. But then again, you never know with Williams. He's looked absolutely done before, too, and here he is.
Hot Brit welterweight prospect Kell Brook (20-0, 13 KO) will meet Michael Jennings (36-2, 17 KO) in the other main event, a fight that was delayed from October 30, when Brook fell ill just before the fight. Jennings wound up fighting that night anyway, beating journeyman Laszlo Komjathi via eight-round shutout.
Also on the card will be prospects Frankie Gavin, Billy Joe Saunders and James DeGale, among others. Heavyweight Derek Chisora will also be on the bill.
