Alex Arthur whines about loss to Nicky Cook, blames English judges

9cb734a405255f0785ff9f2947342e05-getty-boxing-wbo-super-featherweight-arthur-cook_medium Ugh, and another one.

This one's kinda good, though, since Arthur is being really bold about his claim:

"I really think that they robbed me of my title, I really do," the 30-year-old said. "It was three English judges - in England.

"A fighter knows in his heart if he has won or lost a fight and I really thought I had won.

"I could see the shock on some people's faces at ringside. I don't think a lot of them could believe it.

I had Cook winning handily, Sky Sports commentator Jim Watt had Cook winning, and it seemed pretty clear that Arthur just didn't get it done on Saturday night. But what do I know, I don't have a heart.

"I thought I was controlling the fight and it seemed that Nicky was running away in the last two rounds. He didn't want to fight.

"And at the end, he thought I had won it. He came up to me and said, 'You're a great champion, you have won the fight. Well done.'

"So I do not feel like I lost it and I am a wee bit shocked. Obviously, I would love a re-match. I don't think I will get one but I would love it."

See, now this is awesome. He's making the statement that Nicky Cook told him that he won.

Contrary to Arthur's comments, Cook felt he believed he was in front on the scorecards entering the final few rounds and was simply looking to stay out of trouble.

"I was confident that I had been slipping ahead on the judges' cards. I thought I was comfortably winning and, in the last couple of rounds, I just made sure that I boxed sensibly," he said.

And there's your response. So apparently Arthur's just full of crap, which I'm more inclined to believe than Nicky Cook, who boxed like he thought he'd won the fight the last few rounds, coming over and saying, "You have won the fight!"

You know, Arthur had almost no sustained momentum in the fight, so this is pretty amazing to me. He didn't appear satisfied with himself after the final bell rang, though he did feign surprise at the announcement of the official scores giving Cook the victory and his belt.

Boxers. What a lot!

Prescott knocks out Khan in first round!

 Alex Arthur 9 9 9 10 9 9 9 9 9 9 10 9 110
 Nicky Cook 10 10 10 9 10 10 10 10 10 10 9 10 118

I'm stunned -- not so much that Amir Khan lost the fight in Manchester today, but by the fact that Khan simply cannot take a punch. I considered him the best prospect in boxing despite questions about his chin, and having been knocked down by feather-fisted Willie Limond and roughneck Michael Gomez didn't deter me from thinking Khan could really be something special.

But Breidis Prescott ended that today. It's not that Khan has a questionable chin. He has NO chin. And I mean that -- he cannot take a punch. As soon as he was hit, he was finished. He has one of the worst chins in the sport today, I'd wager, maybe the worst at the upper levels. Prescott caught him with a right that hurt him, then dropped him with a vicious left hook. The referee let Khan fight on even though many would have stopped it there, but it was as good as over. Khan was dropped again just after the fight re-started, and this time couldn't beat the count.

He can't take a punch. He's not a good fighter. I like him, think he's a great kid, and yeah he's an offensive dynamo. But he can't be hit. That's a bad thing for a boxer.

All congratulations to Breidis Prescott, who said he'd knock Khan out in four rounds and did it in less than one. I hope Amir Khan comes back strong, but there's only so far he can go. You can't teach someone whiskers, you know?

On the undercard, Nicky Cook won a unanimous decision over Alex Arthur to capture the WBO super featherweight title, winning on scores of 117-111, 117-112 and a ridiculous 115-114. I had it 118-110 for Cook, who executed his gameplan brilliantly. The shorter man, Cook controlled the distance and landed the vast majority of the stinging blows. He piled up round upon round, and now he's on top of his game. He's a fine, fine fighter. Arthur should look into moving up to 135. Congrats to Nicky Cook on his big victory.

Also on the undercard, Fraudley Harrison banged out a boring, crowd-displeasing win over the much smaller George Arias, winning 98-92. Harrison was booed, and Arias cheered. Same ol' same ol'.

And with Amir Khan, we might be looking at the new Audley Harrison. Lots of hype, shallow results.

Bad Left Hook UK Fight Day: Amir Khan v. Breidis Prescott

How about a little bonus fight coverage? We'll have the top two (we hope) for this big UK card. Right now Audley Harrison is fighting and finally turning it up with combinations late in the fight against the much, much smaller George Arias. Crowd has booed most of the fight. Fraudley is still Fraudley.
