Gamboa and Lara shine, Prescott bit by Toledo
Yuriorkis Gamboa and Erislandy Lara, two red-hot Cuban prospects, scored easy first round knockouts in their bouts, but unfortunately the main event featuring lightweight puncher Breidis Prescott stole the show for all the wrong reasons.
Gatekeeper Humberto Toledo fought dirty for much of the bout, losing convincingly along the way, and in the 10th and final round, with 1:58 left to go, Toledo bit Prescott to cause a disqualification.
In the TV opener, Lara (4-0, 3 KO) knocked down Keith Gross (3-1, 1 KO) with a beautiful left hand before continuing the assault with a nasty body shot and finishing him with an uppercut at just over one minute of the opening round. Gamboa (14-0, 12 KO) followed that up by landing one big right hand and knocking out Walter Estrada (35-9, 24 KO) in 35 seconds.
A heavyweight swing bout was shown to kill some time before the main event. Prescott (21-0, 18 KO) dominated but did so in an ugly fashion, showing many things he needs to work on, such as punch accuracy, an ability to do more than flick a few jabs that lead to nothing, or punch one-at-a-time. He never seemed to get into any rhythm, which could be partially blamed on Toledo's continual roughhouse tactics, including blatantly holding behind the head on numerous occasions. Toledo was knocked down in the latter part of the fight.
The bite DQ is ridiculous and completely inexcusable, and should pretty much seal Toledo's fate as far as American TV spots go. He's a tough sell; it's not like he's Mike Tyson or anything. As a regular gatekeeper with some skills, he was an attractive test. With this on his sheet, he loses some appeal.

Gutierrez off tonight's Friday Night Fights
Junior middleweight Richar Gutierrez's fight with Jesus Gonzalez was supposed to main event tonight's Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 from Florida, but the bout has been scrapped because Gonzalez can't make weight. He alerted everyone that he'd be unable to come down to 154 after weighing 158 on Wednesday.
He offered Gutierrez half of his $7,500 purse to fight even though the weight would be off, but Gutierrez declined. Honestly I think if I'm Gutierrez, I would've gone ahead and fought. He's certainly within his rights to not and I don't blame him, but his career isn't exactly peaking right now after a TKO loss to Alfredo Angulo and a struggling draw against tomato can Jerome Ellis last time out.
With Gutierrez-Gonzalez off, Breidis Prescott's fight with gatekeeper Humberto Toledo is bumped to main event status. The card is still pretty nice, with Yuriorkis Gamboa taking on Walter Estrada and Cuban prospect Erislandy Lara in action against Keith Gross. We'll be here at 9pm ET for live, round-by-round coverage and scoring.
Yuriorkis Gamboa's opponent named for Feb. 20
An opponent has been named for Yuriorkis Gamboa's February 20 return to the ring on an action-packed Friday Night Fights. Colombian Walter Estrada will face the Cuban star prospect.
Estrada (35-8, 24 KO) has become a bit of a go-to gatekeeper since challenging Scott Harrison for the WBO featherweight title in 2004. Since then, he's gone 9-5, beating no one of any repute and losing to the likes of Vicente Mosquera, Kevin Mitchell and Roman Martinez, among others.
Should be a semi-walkover for Gamboa, though you should always beware the Colombians. A Gamboa win sets him up for another quick return to the ring on April 3, where he'll main event Shobox from Primm, Nevada.
Gamboa-Estrada will be part of a killer Friday Night Fights tripleheader along with Richar Gutierrez-Jesus Gonzalez and Breidis Prescott-Humberto Toledo.
