Boxing Results Roundup: Snooki Boxing's Debut, Frampton Knocks Out Hughes, Spinks Beats Powell
London, England
Carl Frampton KO-7 Kris Hughes: Frampton (12-0, 8 KO) is all about calling out British super bantamweight champ Scott Quigg right now, but while Frampton looked good beating Hughes, Quigg is a whole other ball of wax. Quigg can punch, for one thing, which Hughes (15-2, 1 KO) cannot. There was no reason for Frampton to have any fear of Hughes, and as such he was able to pretty easily win this fight, and score a big knockout in seven. I like Carl Frampton, but he's a good handful of fights away from possibly being ready to give Quigg and trouble, and by that point, Quigg might be moved on to world level.
Erick Ochieng TKO-9 Nick Quigley: This 154-pound clash for the vacant English title was reportedly a hell of a fight, but I haven't seen it for myself yet. Ochieng (9-1, 3 KO) and Quigley (10-2, 0 KO) are said to have cut quite a pace early, and then in the fifth Quigley began to tire. (BoxRec Recap)
Robin Reid TKO-5 Daniel Cadman: Reid, 40, continues to fight. No one is quite certain why. Having seen him fight last year, he's just not very good anymore. He's slow, he's robotic offensively, and he's just too old to be a factor at 168 or 175. His goal is apparently to get back to British level, but in reality his last fight should have been his loss to Carl Froch in 2007.
Undercard: John Ryder TKO-2 Mariusz Biskupski, Ryan Taylor TKO-3 Robin Deakin, Wadi Camacho PTS-4 Moses Matovu, Andreas Evangelou PTS-4 Robert Studzinski.
Friday Night Fights Results: Provodnikov Knocks Out Torres, Kim Outbrawls Amidu
Ruslan Provodnikov and Ji Hoon won as expected on tonight's edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights, and did so in their usual fashion, as well.
In the junior welterweight main event, Provodnikov improved to 21-1 (14 KO) with a sixth round knockout of a gritty but undersized and overmatched David Torres (21-3-2, 13 KO). Torres, the local favorite in Washington, was a replacement opponent for previously-scheduled Julio Diaz, and continued his streak of non-wins with his first fight in 11 months. The 33-year-old veteran is now 1-3-2 in his last six fights.
Provodnikov vs Torres: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage
Tonight's Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com begins at 9 p.m. EST, and features a familiar pair of Banner Promotions names in a pair of fights that promise action. Bad Left Hook will have round-by-round coverage of the show.
In the junior welterweight main event, set for 10 rounds, Ruslan Provodnikov (20-1, 13 KO) will face David Torres (21-2-2, 13 KO). Provodnikov, 28, is a young Russian who looks and fights (somewhat) like Kostya Tszyu and has become a Friday Night Fights fan favorite over the last few years. He's coming into this fight having won a debated decision over DeMarcus "Chop Chop" Corley on December 5 in Russia, in a fight where he suffered a cut that was initially thought to be bad enough to keep him out of this fight.
ESPN Friday Night Fights 2012: New Season Has Two January Shows in Place
The upcoming new season of ESPN Friday Night Fights has a pair of January cards in place, and both look to continue in the tradition of the very strong 2011 season.
On January 6 from Key West (where ESPN loves to do a January show), the season debut of the series will feature super middleweights Dyah Davis (20-2-1, 9 KO) and Alfonso Lopez (22-1, 17 KO) in the main event.
Davis, 30, won a pair of fights this year, including a ShoBox upset of Marcus "Too Much" Johnson in April. In October, he defeated respected trial horse Darnell Boone over six rounds in Connecticut.
Lopez, 29, is best-known (or only known) for his decent showing against a rusty Kelly Pavlik on the Pacquiao vs Mosley pay-per-view in May, where he lost a majority decision in a fight where he had a perfectly good argument for winning six of the ten rounds. Judges scored that one 95-95 (which was what I had), and then 99-91 and 98-92 for Pavlik, which was a little transparent. In September, Lopez beat Michael Walker in Texas.
In the co-feature, a pair of hard-punching junior middleweight prospects will hook up, as 21-year-old Stevie Martinez (11-0, 9 KO) faces 27-year-old Jonathan Cepeda (11-0, 10 KO). The swing bout fight will feature DiBella Entertainment middleweight prospect J'Leon Love (9-0, 6 KO). Love, 24, is currently in camp with Team Margarito.
