TONIGHT! Marquez-Vazquez II: La Venganza + Diaz/Morales

Show starts at 9 eastern, and we'll be live with coverage of both fights. REALLY looking forward to this one, as I think everyone is.

Best of luck tonight to Erik Morales, too, who's attempting to become Mexico's first four-division champion. If Marquez/Vazquez hadn't been on tonight, I'd be in Chicago to see "El Terrible." I re-watched Morales/Pacquiao I today; what a phenomenal fight that was, and one of Morales' best performances. Plus, I'm just hoping Erik can hold off Father Time for a little longer.

Caballero/Lacierva R1
Hidalgo crowd is stunningly pro-Lacierva.

The seven-inch height difference is just wild to look at. Caballero sticks a long right in just after the opening bell, and that's going to keep Lacierva in a lot of trouble. Lacierva lunges in with a big left hook to the jaw, which is crazy. Really awkward fight for the first minute and a half. Lacierva is really controlling the action, which I did not expect. Caballero's height is great, but it's actually a disadvantage so far. A gutsy guy with some pop can give him trouble, and that's what's happening so far. Lacierva is totally frustrating Caballero, to the point where Celestino throws two blatant shots to the back of the head at the end of the round.

Lacierva 10-9

Caballero/Lacierva R2
Lacierva continues to fight with a lot of balls, landing two left hooks. Caballero is elbowing. Caballero is getting pissy. Lacierva with a low blow, both guys get cautioned. Left-right from Lacierva. This is getting rowdy when Lacierva gets inside. Caballero hasn't really accomplished anything.

Caballero comes with chopping right hands, but neither land clean. Lacierva sticks Caballero with a right after Caballero forearms him away a little bit, then Caballero throws and misses two embarrassingly wild right hooks.

Lacierva 10-9
Lacierva 20-18

Caballero/Lacierva R3
Lacierva with another double left hook, this time to the body. Lacierva with a huge flurry in the middle of the ring, turning Caballero around. Lacierva is warned for illegal shots to the back of the head, which may well have been legit, but Caballero is such a prick that I don't even care.

HUGE overhand right from Lacierva. Caballero is thrwoing big shots, but missing. Holy shit, Lacierva just hit him from behind the back. This fight is bizarre.

Lacierva is fighting way above expectations, Caballero way below. This is a barroom brawl -- like, a real barroom brawl. Lots of punches missing, tempers flaring, ugly action.

Lacierva pushes Caballero at the bell.

Caballero/Lacierva R4
Cole warns Lacierva that he'll take a point for the next illegal anything.

Nice long jab from Caballero after another half a round where I'd score for the challenger. Right and then a fast four-punch combo from Lacierva. Big right to the head from Lacierva. Caballero is killing himself as much as Lacierva is beating him. Left uppercut from Caballero, right to the body. Overhand right from Caballero, who has fought himself back into this round. Bell sounds before he can win it, though.

Im pretty impressed with Lacierva so far.  Who do you like in the main event, Scott?  Im going with Vasquez.  The odds are too good to pass up.

Caballero/Lacierva R5
I don't get what Caballero's gameplan the first four rounds has been. I just don't damn get it at all.

Caballero was holding the arm, Cole let it go, and Lacierva just starts firing away on him. Then Caballero is elbowing him and shit. This fight is dirty as all hell.

Lacierva with a right-left, then a left hook. Man, there's more dirty fighting. I just don't know what the hell to make of this fight, but I can damn sure say this ain't no sweet science.

Fighting after the bell.

Caballero/Lacierva R6
Nice snapping jab from Caballero. This HAS been a really fun fight, I should say that.

Caballero misses a punch with Lacierva's back turned. Caballero is a total dick, man. And he's not even near the level of either of the main eventers.

Caballero is starting to land clean shots, long straight punches. Lacierva very obviously headbutts the hell out of Caballero, and there goes a point. This is some kind of brawl.

This might've been Caballero's best round, but it was definitely Lacierva's worst, plus the point got taken.

backstage whining from Marquez and Vazquez
Something about the glove wraps. Beats the hell out of me. They're going to fight, though. Marquez had threatened to not.

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 9:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Caballero/Lacierva R7
Right cross from Caballero, Lacierva comes back. More elbows and forearms from Caballero, another warning, and a deduction threatened.

Lacierva decks him with a huge lunging right. It's hard to say if either guy is getting hurt, because it wouldn't really appear so. Hard body shot from Caballero.

Hard right upstairs from Lacierva, and Caballero is whining about something while getting destroyed by Lacierva. Caballero is turning his back over and over and then complaining.

Now Caballero is bringing it. They stumble and hold and punch until the bell. This is some kind of something.

Caballero 10-9, close round
Lacierva 67-65

Caballero/Lacierva R8
"Al, it's not pretty, but it's entertaining." Understatement of the year from Steve Albert.

I don't know WHAT Caballero is doing. He's turning, moving in awkward angles, and getting caught repeatedly. If he had fought to his reach and height, he'd be winning, or it might be over.

Caballero IS now fighting with his jab, boxing a lot, and controlling the action, neutralizing Lacierva.

We do have a close fight now, and Caballero could well be ahead on the official cards.

Caballero 10-9
Lacierva 76-75

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 9:51 PM EDT   0 recs

Caballero/Lacierva R9
Caballero's corner thinks he's down by four points. I don't see that at all.

Albert thinks Caballero is way behind, too. This sounds like a case of guys getting a little too excited about a surprising performance. He hasn't dominated.

And, again, I think Caballero is winning this round. Now Lacierva catches him with two good shots. Lacierva starts swinging, and he's trying to steal the round. Caballero is warned for pushing Lacierva's head down.

Caballero 10-9
85-85 heading into the championship rounds

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 9:55 PM EDT   0 recs

Caballero/Lacierva R10
Caballero warned for holding. Cole again doesn't take a point.

Cole tries to break up a hold, and Lacierva is shoved down. Cole warns him AGAIN. Oh, but it's his last one. Why not take a point for this shit? He's been warned several times for several offenses.

Caballero with a big uppercut. Now it's just wrestling, basically. Crappy, standing wrestling. Lacierva is getting hurt this round, and I think he's hit the wall. Caballero has taken over in this fight, despite all the bullshit.

This has now gone beyond "ugly but entertaining" and into "ugly and shitty."

Caballero 10-9
Caballero 95-94

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 9:59 PM EDT   0 recs

Caballero/Lacierva R11
I don't see any way Lacierva can win this fight. He's gassed, he's not landing anymore, and he's getting beaten up.

Now they're trading. It's sloppy, but it beats the clinching. I think Caballero just kicked at him? What the hell.

By the way, this is not a star-making performance for Caballero.

The logos in the ring are slippery as all hell. That was Caballero's second slip, and Lacierva had one earlier, too.

Lacierva with a hook inside, but he's out of the fight now. Caballero is dictating the pace and the action, and all the momentum is his. Jab, jab, slapping rights, uppercuts, and Lacierva can't work in.

Caballero 10-9
Caballero 105-103

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 10:03 PM EDT   0 recs

Caballero/Lacierva R12
Lacierva with a nice flurry in the center, then hits him with a right. Lots of breaks in action from clinches in the second half of the fight, after an all-action mess in the first half. Lacierva is back to trying to fight his way inside, which is the only way he can beat Caballero, who's back to being totally frustrated by Lacierva's workrate, and is missing badly over and over.

Lots of holding. Lacierva eats a nice uppercut, then slips trying to come back in. He might've gotten floored there if he hadn't, so that might be helpful.

This'll be interesting on the cards, huh? Fun fight. Not a good one, but fun.

UNANIMOUS DECISION FOR CELESTINO CABALLERO

Steve bitches. I don't know, man. I'm not too upset. Some people aren't going to be impressed by Laciera's style, and frankly, I think Lacierva really hurt him maybe two times, tops. Lots of lunging and punching.

Caballero accuses Lacierva of being a dirty fighter. He didn't start the fire.

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 10:11 PM EDT   0 recs

BUT...
Here's one thing I do question: How the hell did Caballero never get a point taken away? Lacierva asks the same question, and rightfully so.

Marquez/Vazquez R1
HERE WE GO!

Feeling-out process to start, both guys trying to establish the jab on their way inside, and now they're getting ready in the center. Straight to the nose from Marquez, Vazquez shimmies and sends Marquez back with a left hook. Uppercut from Marquez, Vazquez with a flurry, and Marquez comes right back at him. No holding, all boxing.

Marquez is clearly quicker, which we found out last time. Both guys are fighting and working, as expected. Vazquez has some swelling near the temple already. Marquez with some nice body work, and then he catches him with a thunderous left hook.

Marquez 10-9

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 10:46 PM EDT   0 recs

Marquez/Vazquez R2
Vazquez is bombing, but Marquez is too good to get caught often. Two hard shots from both guys. This is a powder keg of a matchup.

Marquez working the jab, Vazquez trying to do the same, but his just isn't as good. As Al says, though, all Vazquez needs is to have it good enough to get him inside to use his hook. Marquez with a borderline low blow, quick warning from Guadalupe Garcia.

This is a world of difference after that mess of an opening bout.

Vazquez is being kept at bay so far for the most part. Marquez with a left hook. Misses a second try. Vazquez with a nasty left hook, followed with a stinging right, and Marquez throws triple jabs. Another left hook from Vazquez. This is a hell of a fight already.

Vazquez 10-9
19-19

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 10:50 PM EDT   0 recs

Marquez/Vazquez R3
Marquez is ROCKED with a left hook, and he retreats to the ropes. He's hurting him bad. The left hook is beautiful, but HERE COMES MARQUEZ!

Marquez with a left upstairs, and he looks like he's gotten his legs back. This is a brawl now.

Marquez is throwing huge, heavy shots, but Vazquez is firing back. Exactly what you'd expect. Huge uppercut from Vazquez, and Marquez is hurt again. HERE COMES MARQUEZ AGAIN.

Vazquez has a nasty cut over his left eye. This is war. Now it appears as though his right eye is cut, too.

MARQUEZ WITH RIGHTS AND LEFTS. Vazquez is staggered! WOO.

Marquez is just letting it go, but Vazquez's legs are back. This is two warriors moving forward and refusing to stop fighting. I think Marquez is cut, too.

If this goes the full 12, I'll fucking eat my hat.

Vazquez 10-9
Vazquez 29-28

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 10:54 PM EDT   0 recs

Marquez/Vazquez R4
Marquez's eye is nasty, underneath. Vazquez is bleeding from both eyes. These two are awesome.

HUGE shot from Vazquez. Marquez digs to the body to come back. Marquez eats an awesome uppercut, and Marquez's legs look bad. Marquez with a sick hook to the body.

Vazquez is all power shots now, and Marquez has been goaded into Vazquez's fight. Marquez is now going back to the jab, which is very wise.

This is ALL action. Throwing back and forth, both guys landing beautiful shots, both guys showing how great their chins are. More and more brutal shots.

MARQUEZ DRILLS HIM UPSTAIRS. Vazquez comes back! Marquez comes back! Good God almighty. Anyone disappointed? Bueller?

Marquez 10-9
38-38

by SC on Aug 4, 2007 10:58 PM EDT   0 recs

Marquez/Vazquez R5
Both guys look like they've been out there for 15 rounds.

Stiff jab from Vazquez as they pepper each other near the ropes, and they go back to the center of the ring. Vazquez comes up and under with a left hook, but it misses. Pace has slowed, but how in the hell couldn't it?

Vazquez with a beautiful combo to the head, and he knows that the cut is dangerous. Vazquez catches Marquez badly, but goes down on a slip.

They're back up and trading. They're just brawling again, but it's technically superior brawling. This is phenomenal.

Marquez/Vazquez R6
We're getting to the end of the FIRST HALF of this fight. Good grief.

VAZQUEZ WITH A HUGE LEFT HOOK -- MARQUEZ IS DOWN.

He's up, and we're fighting on!

Now Marquez has to survive the next two and a half minutes. Vazquez smells blood. He's out for the kill now. Marquez is fighting back on instinct. Vazquez with an uppercut and a hook, he's ALL OVER HIM. Marquez is still standing, which is amazing.

GARCIA STOPS IT -- VAZQUEZ WINS BY TKO!

Holy mother of pearl. If you're a fight fan and aren't on your feet for these two, you should question why you're watching. We've got ourselves a rivalry, and it's a damn great one.

Israel Vazquez TKO-6

official time: 1:16 of round six
Al thinks the stoppage was premature. I think it may well have been, too, but I do think Vazquez was about to knock him out. Marquez's legs were wobbly, his eyes were glassy, and he was going down.

We're getting a trilogy. They have to do it.

FUCK YEAH!
That's what I'm talking about, SC!

After cashing in on those 5-1 odds for Vasquez to win by KO, I've just ordered the Diaz-Morales fight on PPV.  I missed the Juan Manuel Lopez fight, which is the one I was the most interest in, but, fuck it, I'm in time for the main event.  Plus, after the Vasquez-Marquez fight my girlfriend actually said "I wish there was more boxing we could watch right now," which made me kind of want to ask her to marry me.  So here goes.  I'll do my best to live-blog this fucker.

Morales-Diaz Round 1

by Kevin Gonzalez on Aug 4, 2007 11:29 PM EDT   0 recs

R2
Morales goes down, but its called a slip.  He clearly has more experience than Diaz.  Morales is against the ropes, gets away from Diaz.  Diaz isnt working the jab, hes going after Morales, looking good again.  Morales comes back with some counter hooks and uppercuts...they move back to the middle of the ring.  Not much happens in the last 30 seconds.

Round to Diaz.

19-18 Eric.

by Kevin Gonzalez on Aug 4, 2007 11:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Round 3
Pretty even first minute.  Diaz does look stronger than Eric at this point.  Hes working the lead left hand.

Eric reverts to his boxer style. He flurries.  Hard combination by Eric.  Diaz comes back.  Eric is making him pay now.  The experience, like I said before, is clearly evident.  Eric is giving him a lesson at this point, looking very good.

Round to Morales, no doubt.

Morales 29-27

by Kevin Gonzalez on Aug 4, 2007 11:35 PM EDT   0 recs

Round 4
Morales starts strong.  Hes making Diaz follow him around the ring.  He looks very relaxed in there right now.  Good left hand by Morales.

Diaz cant get his game going...hes being somewhat cautious at this point.  Perhaps as a result of the knockdown.

Diaz comes back, a nice combo to Morales, but then morales comes back with a combo of his own.  Morales is winning the round again, I think.

They trade shots again.  Eric follows Diaz around the ring jabbing and punching.  Another round for Eric, I think.

Morales 39-36.

By the way, Scott:  I'm back.  Hatton-Mayweather, Cotto-Mosley, TAylor-Pavlik and this night has restored my faith in boxing.

Round 5
Good action so far.  Pretty even for the first minute of the round.  Diaz muscling Morales into the ropes, but Morales keeps sticking his jab.  Nice body shot by Morales, nice combo to the body by Diaz.  Morales drives Diaz back with another combination.  Diaz drives morales into the ropes, doing a pretty good job this round.  Morales drives him back.  Pretty close round once again, but I think Morales did enough to get it.

Morales 49-45

by Kevin Gonzalez on Aug 4, 2007 11:44 PM EDT   0 recs

Round 6
Diaz starts pretty strong, drives Morales into the ropes.

By the way, I thought this was supposed to be an HBO PPV.  Theres no Merchant, no Lampley, no Kellerman.  What the fuck?

That aside...

Morales with a good flurry; Diaz comes back.  Good round.  Really good round.  Diaz gets warned for hitting behind the head.

Fights in the middle of the ring.  Pretty cautious round on both sides.  Diaz hits Morales; again, Morales comes back with a couple of jabs.

Diaz takes Morales against the ropes, hits him with a couple of good body shots.  Morales takes it back to the middle of the ring.  AGain, Morales's experience is coming through.  Hes clearly the veteran here; he knows what hes doing.

He looks very calm in the corner.  Diaz looked good in this round, though, so Ill give it to him.  Although Ill admit, it was close.

Morales 58-55

by Kevin Gonzalez on Aug 4, 2007 11:49 PM EDT   0 recs

7
Pretty even first minute.  Diaz catches Morales, Morales backs up.  Diaz catches him again.  Diaz is looking pretty good, but Morales clearly isnt hurt.

Morales starts working the jab int he middle of the ring.  He starts letting his hands go, clobbering Diaz with combinations.

Diaz comes back with a few left hands.  Diaz isnt scared of Eric.

Good action in round 7...they trade shots!  Morales looks a bit tired.  I think this is Diaz's round.

Morales 67-66

Fights in the middle of the ring.  Morales lands a few combos, but Diaz takes him back to the ropes and starts working the body.

Morales looks tired.  Diaz has him against hte ropes again, Morales is tired.  Shit.  I love Eric, but it looks like hes too tired.

Morales 76, Diaz 76.

Morales starts strong.  Hes boxing again.  Hes dominating the first minute of the round.  Good left by Morales, hes clearly winning this round so far.

diaz comes back.  They trade, great action right now.  Morales gets the best of it, I think.

Diaz keeps backing Morales up, makeing the round closer.  Eric stays back and counters.  Doing a good job of countering.  Its a close round, but I think Eric did enough to win it.

Round 10
Eric is boxing beautifully, but Diaz backs him up into the ropes.  Diaz is clearly the agressor at this point.  Eric comes back.  Hes boxing at a distance, doing a good job.

Halfway through the tenth, its a pretty close round.

Diaz with a nice combination.  Morales comes back.  It really is a good fight.  Diaz clips Morales on the way out.

Very close round.  Hard right by Eric.  Diaz comes back, backs eric up into the ropes.  Eric fights his way out.

Very very close round.  Im going to say even.

Morales 96, Diaz 95

Round 11
Diaz starts strong.  Good work to the body.  Diaz keeps backing Eric up.  Hes winning the first minute of the round.

Big right hand by Eric.  Diaz took it without any problems, but it was one of the cleanest punches of the fight.  Morales is coming back.  He catches Diaz on the way out.  The experience is clear.  I think Morales is winning this round at this point.

Diaz comes back, though.  Fuck, its a hard round to score.  Diaz came back in the last twenty seconds.  I really dont know.  I think Diaz did enough to steal the round.  Im a Morales fan, but Im trying to score this objectively.  Round to Diaz.

Morales 105, Diaz 105

Diaz is winning the round.

Thirty seconds to go.

Diaz doing a good job still.  Twenty seconds.
