On Pascal: "I think he's a joke."

On Miranda: "He's a very strong fighter. Crude in a lot of ways. ... Raw with his skills. ... Skillfully he still has some work to be done."

Pascal-Pittman ready to go
Wlad Klitschko is at ringside.

Pascal-Pittman R1
Frank Gentile is the referee.

Pittman sticks Pascal with a couple of jabs, and Pascal is a little off-balance. Pittman pops him with a left hook and Pascal goes down to a knee, but Gentile rules it a slip. Looked like a punch from the TV angle, but who knows?

Pittman thus far is the aggressor, but that probably doesn't mean a whole lot. Pascal moving a lot, looking for his opening. There's a left hook that catches Pittman on the chin, after a feigned right. Overhand right fails to land after Pascal doubles up on the jab, with Pittman countering him.

Pascal is really loading up now, throwing heavy shots. Pascal is lunging a lot, something that might get him decked against a puncher like Miranda. Pascal with a three-punch combination near the end of the round, but none of it lands solidly. Pascal came slow out of the gates, but won the round pretty easily. This is looking like a mismatch in terms of speed, which is going to kill Pittman.

Pascal's glove touched
Not his knee. And that should have been scored a knockdown. He as off-balance, but that's his own fault.

Pascal-Pittman R2
Pittman is aggressive, but then whomp, Pascal hits him with a counter left hook as Pittman lunges in, and Pittman goes down face-first.

Up at 8, and he looks like he's fine.

Pittman comes in hard again, and this tim ehe goes down on a push. Gentile warns Pascal. This isn't exactly pretty so far. One-two lands for Pascal, and Pittman is against the ropes and getting popped. NASTY left hook lands from Pascal, but Pittman shakes it off. If he was a one-punch power type of fighter, Pascal might have just knocked Pittman out.

Pascal with a double left hook, then sticks the jab in as the bell sounds. Big round for Pascal.

Pascal-Pittman R3
Pascal with another quick left hook as he comes in, then dances back out and makes Pittman miss. Pittman backs Pascal down with a nice shot, and Pascal laughs it off. Pittman stung again with a left hook, and Pascal throws another three-punch combo.

There is a vast gulf in speed here, and Pascal with another left hook. Pittman throws a bunch, Pascal easily avoids all of it. Pascal lands a few more punches, nothing of note, but Pittman isn't landing anything, period.

Pascal with another left, then throws four straight jabs. Pittman badly misses again. Pittman is making Pascal look like Roy Jones, sans the outrageous explosive power. Pascal with more left hooks, and this is an absolute mismatch. Pittman is trying, but he is not good enough.

Pascal-Pittman R4
First two minutes of the fourth round are just more Pascal domination. This is pretty routine; Pascal is in shape, having fought a month ago, and he's looking sharp. Pittman has no answers for his speed, can't land, can't hurt Pascal when he occasionally does land, and is being systematically dismantled by the superior boxer.

I know boxers like to talk shit, and Edison Miranda and Allan Green are two of the best shit-talkers out there, but anyone that watches Jean Pascal fight and can't see his ability is just blind. Anyone that overlooks this guy is going to get beaten.

Pascal 10-9
Pascal 40-35

Klitschko is talking with Teddy and Joe now. Ibragimov is also ringside tonight. Klitschko sparring with Andy Lee, which I'd read about a couple days ago, is a very interesting thing for both sides.

Pascal-Pittman R5
Pittman lands a couple of decent shots in the opening minute, but every time he does, Pascal just counters him anyway. Pittman cannot establish anything.

Pascal with four consecutive left hooks in the corner, and then he comes back with a combo. He's now just beating the hell out of Omar Pittman.

They're on Klitschko about quality of opponents this year, and Klitschko rightly says that Austin was a mandatory. People have got to understand that Ray Austin was a fight Klitschko had to take or vacate his belt. Those were his options.

Another round for Pascal.

Pascal-Pittman R6
Green on Pascal again: "He has a lot of athletic ability, but I think you shouldn't equate that with having the ability to fight. ... A lot of physical gifts, but as far as boxing skill and doing the right things, I'm not sure."

Pascal continues to dominate. As Green said, it now looks like Banks has a broken spirit and is just standing to try to go 10.

Pittman gets backed into the ropes again, but he gets out of there. Pascal is now showboating, asking Pittman to fight. And he's not going to.

ESPN
ESPN's commentators are pretty stiff sometimes, but they do a much better job in general of building up their up-and-coming talent for future fights. They also do a better job than HBO of getting mics in front of boxers in the crowd watching the fights.

re:
As far as simply calling the action goes, Joe and Teddy have no peer. The HBO teams offer more in terms of conversational ability and covering for dull fights.

Pascal-Pittman R7
If this fight could end, I'd be in favor of it. This is one-sided and and well out of reach.

More left hooks land. Atlas thinks it's time for Pascal to knock Pittman out. This was the round I called.

Pittman catches Pascal a little with a counter shot, and Pascal staggers slightly, but he comes right back and his legs seem fine. The South Florida fans are starting to jeer a little bit, as Pittman isn't fighting and Pascal isn't going for the kill.

Pascal with some jabs, and PITTMAN NAILS HIM WITH A LEFT HOOK! Pascal stumbles back, and his legs DON'T look good this time.

Pascal is now moving backward consistently, and he has to survive the last 30 seconds. Pittman with a left hook, and he hurts Pascal again. Pascal may have gotten too confident in just keeping on doing what he was doing, letting his guard down and not pressing as much as he needed to.

Pascal took this round again, but Pittman just shook him up legit.

Pascal-Pittman R8
I'll be damned, but Pittman is coming out hard. Pascal gets headbutted, it appears. No call on it.

Pascal is now running, and he's hurt. Pittman is stalking. Atlas gave the last round to Pittman, which I think is a bit much. He was dominated for the majority of the round.

Long jabs from Pascal as he looks like he's found his legs. Pittman charges, and Pascal misses a left hook. Pittman still the one stalking, a right hand misses. Pascal is losing this round for real, with Pittman outlanding him pretty substantially.

Pittman's timing has been much better. RIGHT HAND LANDS AND PASCAL IS HURT! Bell sounds with him up, and he may have been saved by the bell there. WOW.

Pittman 10-9
Pascal 79-72

Pascal-Pittman R9
Well, this one has gotten interesting in the last two rounds.

Joe tries to push that "this is turning into a great comeback story." It's not, really. He has to knock Pascal out to win.

Long, confident punches from Pittman. A hard right lands. He's holding his lands low and sticking Pascal like HE'S Roy Jones. This is a bizarre turnaround.

Pascal with a lead right. Pittman misses with an uppercut, and Pittman with a hard left now. Pascal just has to hang on, but Pittman needs to go wild. He has no other chance. And he's let Pascal get his head and legs back, and he's getting tagged some again. Holding the left land low won't help that, but going for broke is all he's got.

Pascal got back to business. It wasn't as easy as earlier on, but this is how Pascal wins this fight.

not bad
Turning in to a pretty good fight.

Pascal
Pascal hasn't impressed me at all tonight (even before he got rocked the first time).  Yeah, he won the first seven rounds, but I don't really see him being a major player.

If Pittman had actually thrown some punches in the last minute of Round 7, he might have been able to stop Pascal.  As an aside:  SC, how could you give Pascal Round 7?

Miranda would knock this guy out in four rounds.

by Kevin Gonzalez on Jan 11, 2008 9:52 PM EST   0 recs

round seven
Thought Pascal totally dominated the round until the big shots in the last minute or so. It wasn't enough for me to give Pittman a round that he wasn't in until he did score good stuff that carried over into the eighth.

by SC on Jan 11, 2008 9:55 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Pascal-Pittman R10
Teddy gave the ninth to Pittman, too. I don't see it. I didn't see the seventh, either. Teddy has gotten too caught up in momentum. The seventh was all Pascal before the end, and the ninth was dictated mostly by Pascal once again. The eighth was Pittman's, though. He's fought better, but he isn't exactly fighting like a champion.

In some ways tonight, Pascal reminds me of Jermain Taylor, for a contemporary comparison. He's got it all athletically, but lets himself slip mentally.

Pittman has nothing left in the tank. And here comes Pascal! He's headhunting and just exploding all over Pittman, and the round ends. Pascal wins easy, but he should have knocked Pittman out.

Pascal 10-9
Pascal 99-90

Pascal's performance
I do like him, and enjoy watching him fight. He's got the natural ability to be a star. But his performance tonight was questionable, and people are going to rightly have Miranda as a heavy favorite in June. Pascal showed a total lack of finishing ability tonight. Maybe Pittman is tougher than most of us thought, but come on. Pascal was a far superior fighter, has the power to hurt Pittman, and has the speed to hit him so much that it shouldn't matter if he doesn't have top-grade power.

Pittman got back into a fight he shouldn't have been in at all. And Pascal let him get there. That's a knock.

by SC on Jan 11, 2008 9:57 PM EST   0 recs

Pascal
He's definitely a quick; there's no question about that.  But not only did he lack the finishing ability (against a guy who was pretty much just standing there all night, not throwing many punches), I thought his defense was pretty bad.  Actually, Pittman showed a great lack of finishing ability himself:  he hurt Pascal much more than Pascal ever hurt him, and had him out on his feet with a minute to go in the seventh (and then later in the eighth).  It seemed like Pascal was slacking off after the fifth round, when he needed to be explosive.  Perhaps he was nervous, this being the biggest fight of his young career.  All I'm saying is that if Miranda hurts him, he's not going to have trouble finishing the fight.  And if a journeyman like Pittman can hurt him...

Damn, Sergio Mora fought tonight and ESPN didn't even show the fight?  That's surprising.

by Kevin Gonzalez on Jan 11, 2008 10:07 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Mora was on Telefutura
His stock has dropped like a rock. Not that being on Telefutura is bad, but it's like you said. I mean can you imagine a year ago, Mora not being on ESPN on a Friday night he was fighting? Too much backlash for his powerless style, his junk that led to no fight with Taylor, and then his crap performance against Elvin Ayala. Mora will need to do something special to get his star back.

I think Miranda wins in two rounds.  Then again, I might be talking out of my ass.

by Kevin Gonzalez on Jan 11, 2008 10:12 PM EST   0 recs

ooh, half the time of my pick
Banks has good technical skill, but he gets hit. And I mean, come on. That's absurd to match against Miranda.

Teddy comparing it to a Volkswagen v. a truck is pretty fair.

ESPN
I love when they act like a fight was something else. "Back-and-forth brawl" really gives Pavlik-Miranda a reputation as a competitive fight. Miranda popped Kelly and hurt him a couple times early, but for the most part, Pavlik beat the piss out of Edison Miranda.

by SC on Jan 11, 2008 10:12 PM EST   0 recs

Why does Banks have to be a Volkswagon?
Why can't he be a Mazda Miata?  Blue, and convertible?

Gotta love Teddy.

by Kevin Gonzalez on Jan 11, 2008 10:15 PM EST   0 recs

Did You Know?
That, as a child, Edison Miranda had to walk 42 miles every morning, barefoot, to the road closest to his village in order to gather roadkill for his parents and sixteen siblings?  He also lived inside a volcano.

by Kevin Gonzalez on Jan 11, 2008 10:19 PM EST   0 recs

Miranda-Banks R1
Let's see how long this takes.

Miranda tosses a couple of jabs out there, and Banks is staying way back. He does not want to come in at all. Through 40 seconds, no one has landed anything. Miranda's jabs are pawing.

Banks throws a left hook, misses, and gets the hell out of Dodge. Banks continues to stay away, stay away, through the entire first half of the round. Miranda appears to be trying to keep his head, be patient, and box a little.

There's a dangerous left hook counter from Miranda, but it doesn't land. Banks is totally keeping Miranda at bay.

Well, that was an awful round. Absolutely nothing happened, and I guess I have to give it to Banks for "ring generalship." Nobody landed fuck all.

Banks 10-9

Miranda-Banks R2
Let's, uh...see some punching. Maybe?

The crowd is starting to get restless, but they're actually throwing more. Or at least giving the impression of doing so.

Banks is doing a good job of staying the hell away from Edison Miranda, I'll give him that.

Banks backs Miranda down with counter shots.

Seven years go by before Miranda tries anything notable again, and again Banks counters him away. There's the right from Miranda, and a left follows. Banks with a nice sharp right upstairs.

Another shit round, and another one in which Miranda didn't do anything, and Banks, I feel, did just enough to win on the card.

I don't know what the hell to say about this one so far.

Tommy Morrison
As an aside, Scott:

Did you see those comments Tommy Morrison made in that boxingtalk.com article?  He claims that he doesn't have HIV because HIV cannot be transmitted in heterosexual relationships.  He doesn't care what the actual medical research says.  That it only happens to homosexuals because they are an abomination?

What a douchebag.

here's what's great about that KO
It wasn't a wild punch. It wasn't a bomb. It was perfect. That was Miranda, controlled, showing his brutal power. It was just a beautifully timed and located punch. Just absolutely destroyed Banks.

Miranda-Pascal going at each other
This is why I love boxing, and past of the reason why I tuned in tonight.

Pascal has to be scared shitless.

by Kevin Gonzalez on Jan 11, 2008 10:29 PM EST   0 recs

yeah
I mean, Pascal is tough to hit when he's on his game, but Pittman caught him a couple of times. I don't know, I'd have to guess Pascal would fight differently against Miranda. But Miranda just showed patience to go with his nasty power.

Miranda will rightly be a heavy favorite.

by SC on Jan 11, 2008 10:32 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Translator
Miranda's translator sucks.  They just asked him about Pascal, and Miranda actually said:

I would get in the ring right now with him and the guy he fought tonight (meaning Pittman), and I would knock them out both.

by Kevin Gonzalez on Jan 11, 2008 10:37 PM EST   0 recs

re:
Don't most of the TV translators suck? People I've known fluent in Spanish have always hated the HBO translator.

Indeed
Ray Torres, the HBO guy, is pretty much the worst translator in the sport.
