Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Robert Guerrero v. Jason Litzau

MAIN EVENT
For the IBF Featherweight Title
ROBERT GUERRERO
(21-1-1, 14 KO, Gilroy, CA)
versus
JASON LITZAU
(23-1, 19 KO, St. Paul, MN)

Heavyweight Rematch
T.J. WILSON
(12-1, 8 KO, Miami, FL by way of Atlanta, GA)
versus
TRAVIS WALKER
(26-1-1, 20 KO, Tallahassee, FL)

Tonight's special Shobox features, of course, the IBF featherweight title bout that I discussed a couple posts down earlier today, and I'm picking Guerrero. I think I'm going with a late TKO in a good fight. We'll see action on both sides.

The opener is a rematch between heavyweights T.J. Wilson and Travis Walker, which will hopefully make up for the highly questionable (some would call it "moronic") 15-second stoppage of their first bout in October, which went Wilson's way as he punched at Walker, who was backed into a corner, before referee Raul Caiz stopped the bout -- you know, in 15 seconds. It was a deliriously bad call by Caiz. Walker was in no danger of being seriously hurt, and he deserves this rematch. I look for him to pound the 6'7" southpaw this time around.

The show goes live on Showtime at 11pm eastern, so in about two and a half hours. We'll be here, as it's really a day early undercard for Vazquez-Marquez III, coming to us tomorrow night.

double standard
Nick and Steve rip the Klitschko fight from last weekend for having no action, then Nick says the Walker stoppage the first time out was fair. So do you want action or not? If we get any action do you want the damn thing stopped? The stoppage stunk, there's no argument for it.

Wilson-Walker R1
Walker STORMS out with rights and lefts, but they stumble into each other and get tied up. Body shot from Walker, and he continues to just wing massive shots, whiffing all the way. Walker with another body shot.

Wilson dropped 18 pounds between their first fight and this one, and he looks a lot tighter physically. Hard right from Walker, but it looked like Wilson hurt him just before that. Left hand from the break by Wilson, Walker wasn't even looking at him. Walker is trying to work a dull jab, and now Wilson just starts throwing leather on him against the ropes. Walker gets out of it instead of the fight being stopped this time.

This is one of those heavyweight fights where there's a bunch of action so the commentators act like it's just super and wonderful, but it's sloppy as all hell and nothing is landing square. You've seen a million of them before.

Wilson-Walker R2
Wilson comes out throwing and holding, and the two of them stare at each other while in a clinch. Walker catches Wilson two or three times with some solid shots. This is some dirty boxing.

Ooh, we nearly get a repeat of the Klitschko-Ibragimov tackle.

Walker POUNDS Wilson with a right hand, and Walker slams him with a hook! Wilson is staggering all over the place! He's not punching back, just getting pounded over and over. Down to the body. UPPERCUT!

Wilson falls into the ropes, dazed, and Dr. Lou Moret calls it off. This was far more indicative of the talent levels of the two fighters than their BS first fight. Walker bullrushed Wilson and wiped him out.

Wilson after the fight
"I didn't go down!"

You didn't go down because the ropes were there, you lunatic.

Guerrero-Litzau R1
Guerrero spends the first minute stalking Litzau, who keeps backing up and waiting for counter-punching chances, it seems. Guerrero is the one pressing the action, and Litzau is doing nothing.

HARD left from Guerrero, right down the pipe. The rest of the round is just more ring control from Guerrero. Every time Litzau punches, Guerrero does too. The same can't be said vice versa.

After a round, Guerrero is the much, much better fighter. It's clear as day.

That said, it's one round.

Guerrero-Litzau R2
Guerrero comes out UNLOADING on Litzau, who seems like he has no answer for Guerrero's offensive pressings. Litzau's boxing plan is a dud thus far. He's gotta mix it up. Boxers can only do what they're best at when their backs are against the wall. That's how they win and lose fights.

Farhood: "Right now (Litzau's) moving very nicely, Nick, and he's landing no punches."

Litzau is getting dominated in there. He's doing nothing, and Guerrero is all over his case.

Left to the sternum area, and then Guerrero ducks a wild left hook and destroys him to the body. Litzau looks more like he knows he has to fight hard. And he gets nailed again. This is getting out of hand.

And here comes Litzau with some solid shots! Litzau is catching him, but at the same time, Guerrero just slipped a bunch of punches that could've been night-enders.

This one feels like it's about to pop off.

Buddy McGirt
He's Litzau's second tonight -- does Buddy take over in the ring every time he's the second?

Guerrero-Litzau R3
2:24 of the round, and Litzau's got a cut. Fight stops momentarily.

Guerrero continues to press Litzau, who just isn't in any sort of rhythm whatsoever and isn't accomplishing anything. Litzau staggers Guerrero with a right hand, and Guerrero gets a little shimmy in. He might want to follow up with punches instead.

Guerrero with a grazing uppercut, and now Litzau is hurt with a left hand, moving away and gets caught with a slapping left hook. Litzau is warned for grabbing the ropes. Litzau is trying to do something psychologically here, but it's not working. Guerrero is beating the shit out of Jason Litzau.

Litzau's hands are starting to drop. He's entering the danger zone. He's tired, he's being beaten badly, and his defense is reverting to non-existence.

Buddy: "Let's stop that macho BS."

Guerrero-Litzau R4
Litzau looks bewildered. Referee ruled that the cut was caused by an accidental headbutt.

Nice right from Guerrero. Litzau ducks a straight left. Guerrero stays busy, Litzau can't do anything about it. Litzau is being punished. He now absolutely needs to just start a fight in there.

Litzau adjusts his trunks and gets punched in the mouth for it. All Litzau is doing is posturing and bullshitting. Guerrero is killing him.

Guerrero continues to pummel Litzau with rights and lefts, and Litzau continues to do nothing except occasionally land a good, clean clinch.

Litzau is bleeding from the nose and trying to land in a round-ending flurry, but little lands.

Guerrero-Litzau R5
I need to get a pair of pants with my name on the ass.

This fight is adding nothing more than fuel to the "Litzau was overhyped" fire. This is the most overmatched he's ever looked, and it's also the only real top opponent he's ever fought. Jose Hernandez was supposed to be a win for Litzau en route to a title shot. Litzau is lucky to be here -- "The No. 9 contending featherweight in the IBF!" said Jimmy Lennon. Past that, luck is not on his side.

Guerrero continues to just manhandle Litzau. Litzau tries to fight back, and Guerrero is perfectly willing to fight him toe-to-toe whenever Litzau gets a wild hair across his ass. And he wins every exchange.

Litzau is now whining that he was being held and punched, then extends his glove for a tap -- Guerrero declines. I really like Robert Guerrero. He fights like a fuckin' predator.

Litzau is now fighting back, and he staggers Guerrero a little. Litzau drops his hands like a big tough guy, and gets punched in the mouth again for it as the bell sounds.

Litzau's nose is pretty badly bloodied.

Guerrero-Litzau R6
All signs are pointing to a TKO sometime in the next few rounds for Guerrero, but I admire Litzau showing some fire last round. It's the only chance he has.

You know what? Jason Litzau is coming right the hell back into this fight. Guerrero is getting popped pretty well now. Litzau has guts. For all the crapping on this kid I've done so far tonight, he's fighting hard now. He's showing serious cojones. He's stopped clinching so much, and is trying to fight Guerrero head-on. This is turning into a really entertaining bout.

Best, most competitive round of the fight so far. But as good as Litzau looked that round, he still didn't win it. Guerrero stood with him and landed a few more good shots.

But it's finally getting competitive. Buddy thinks Guerrero is tired.

Guerrero-Litzau R7
Litzau is trying hard, but Guerrero is back to dominating him this round. With a minute left, Guerrero has whomped him from a distance, but there Guerrero gets caught off balance.

I don't know how much Litzau has left. Well, there's the lead right, which is Litzau's best punch. Litzau stings him with another right hand, and Guerrero looked hurt there.

Boy, this has turned into a damn fun little scrap. That was a hell of an ebb and flow round, but I think Guerrero again scraped out the 10 points.

Guerrero-Litzau R8
First minute of the round is Litzau outworking Guerrero and trying to find some offense.

And just like that, a left uppercut staggers Litzau, and a straight left puts him flat on his ass. He's up and fighting at 8 with 1:45 to go.

Guerrero is storming for the kill, and Litzau can only clinch. 1:30 left in the round. Guerero is all over him, and all Litzau can do is hold. Litzau now comes forward, and he looks like he has his legs back, but his arms are sagging and his punches have no steam.

Litzau ducks a massive left that would've ended the night.

Right hook, Litzau is down again. This time, he can't beat the count. He is finished.

Robert Guerrero TKO-8

Killer performance from Guerrero. Litzau has guts and that's the most I can say about him tonight.
