Last night, Gabriel Campillo beat Hugo Garay for his WBA version of the light heavyweight strap. This makes Campillo the first Spaniard to win the light heavyweight title. Campillo managed to win a very tight decision (115-114, 114-114, 114-113) in Garay's hometown. Not half bad for a late replacement. A couple weeks ago, Campillo was supposed to fight Cuban prospect Luis Garcia, but Garcia got cold feet and pulled out. Already having trained, the natural super middleweight Campillo got his first title shot when David Gogiya pulled out of his fight against Garay last week. Evidently, Garay came out strong for the first six rounds, and when he started to gas out, Campillo took over the fight with his superior boxing skill. Campillo, a southpaw, was the European Super Middleweight champ, having beaten Lolenga Mock and having a close and disputed loss to Karo Murat.
