Froch-Bute II Confirmed for March 2013 in Montreal

The story just came out today, it looks like Carl Froch and Lucian Bute will reunite for their second fight next March. There was a rematch clause in place even before the first fight took place, and it looks like the clause has been triggered. Froch has said that he will have a tune-up fight in November, after which he will put his belt on the line in a rematch against Bute. If Bute can fix the mistakes that we all saw in his game in the first fight, it could be a very exciting match. Looks like the rematch is on.

Report - Bute and Froch agree to two fight deal

According to the Daily Mail, within a day after losing the Super Six final to Andre Ward, Carl Froch and Lucian Bute have agreed to a two fight deal where the fighters would meet once in Montreal and once in Nottingham. Under the deal, Bute would get 100% of Canadian money, Froch would get 100% of the UK money and the rest would be split 50/50. If true, this continues Froch's run against top level competition dating all the way back to his title eliminator against Jean Pascal, while this may help silence some of Bute's critics who claim he has been avoiding top fighters. As for Andre Ward, he reportedly has said he would not fight Bute in his next bout, which opened the door for this series.

AFTERMATH: Klitschko Clubs Solis, Bute Batters Magee, Rigondeaux Railroads Casey, Etc.

Vitali Klitschko stopped woebegone Odlanier Solis in one heat in Cologne, Germany, to defend his K2 heavyweight championship when Solis could not continue after blowing out his knee. Lots of cognosenseless types want to keep the fiction rolling that Solis was on his way to some sort of upset when the fight was stopped, but they are conveniently ignoring the fact that replays clearly showed a wild-swinging Solis put on Queer Street from a cuffing counter right to the head. Dan Rafael's Notebook

I encourage everyone to read it this week, as it's filled will all kinds of great material (some of which I may write on independently, once I get the time). Most interesting tidbits: Michael Katsidis may face Robert Guerrero on BAD on March 27; on April 17, a Pavlik-Martinez / Bute-Miranda doubleheader looks likely; and promoters are working on a Darchinyan-Donaire rematch. In his blog, Rafael also mentions the possibility of a Andre Berto-Paulie Malignaggi Haiti benefit fight, Timothy Bradley-Marcos Maidana, and Zab Judah-Carlos Quintana or Victor Cayo.

Golden Boy wins purse bid for Bute-Andrade II

I think this means it's more likely that the fight will be on a Saturday and will be in the US. The link mentions that it might be put on the undercard of Mayweather-Marquez, which would be fantastic. Interbox, whose bid was only marginally lower than Golden Boy's, has been packing the Bell Centre on Friday nights for Bute fights. Does the rematch turn out differently if it's not on Bute's home soil? (Link in French)

Rumor Mill - Lucian Bute vs Allan Green

Lucian Bute and Allan Green have begun negotiations for a fight this summer. Nice to see something's actually happening after Allan Green called him out. A source close to the Bute camp says that they're looking at a July 10 date on Showtime. The fight would either be in Montreal or Quebec City. It's nice to see that Showtime is taking a major interest in the super middleweight division. While the top of the division isn't necessarily as strong as welterweight or lightweight, there's a ton of depth in the division and a lot of great fights that could be made. Rumor also has it that Showtime is considering putting together a tournament for the weight class, but those things are usually too hard to pull off for it to actually ever happen. In other SMW news, Carl Froch has now turned his attention to calling out Mikkel Kessler, saying he'd throw down in Denmark. What the man lacks in brains, he makes up in balls. Update: Now Dan Rafael is reporting that Bernard Hopkins wants a piece of Froch, in England, at 168. Color me skeptical. Frankly, if Hops is willing to make a fight against Froch, who's not a draw even in the UK, then it pretty much means he's avoiding Dawson, since a Hopkins-Dawson fight would generate a LOT more TV revenue than Hopkins-Froch. Hops can talk all he wants to, but his threats to Adamek proved to be a lot of hot air, and I wouldn't give much credence to this claim either.

Bute in Discussions with Dirrell

According to the linked article (in French), Interbox and Gary Shaw have entered into discussions for Lucian Bute to fight Andre Dirrell in his next fight. Bute's mandatory with Andrade would become due in late June, so any fight would need to be before then. In the article, Shaw himself is quoted as saying he'd love to get Dirrell in there against Bute in Montreal, and that Showtime has expressed interest in the fight. It also mentions that Interbox representatives are considering a Bute fight against the Green-De Leon winner. Bute fighting either Dirrell or Green has the potential to be a fantastic fight.

Matchups being discussed (link to ESPN Insider content)

In Dan Rafael's latest blog entry, he notes that some potentially interesting matchups are being discussed, including Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz (with a possible Marquez-Barrera rematch if that falls through) and Jermain Taylor-Lucian Bute. He also mentions that Berto-Mosley seems unlikely (not enough extra $$ for the risk of fighting Mosley instead of Collazo, plus he'd have to vacate his belt) and that Tarver actually did not have a rematch clause for the Dawson fight.
